In February, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a law making it possible for 14- and 15-year-olds to work without pesky child labor protections. Bills in other states are also occurring alongside a rising tide of minors employed in violation of child labor laws, which have more than tripled since 2015.
Child abuse in sweatshop labor was outlawed some 85 years ago children as young as 13 are working in slaughterhouses.
On 60 Minutes last night, Shannon Rebolledo told Scott Pelley about being alerted to a middle school that told police about acid burns on the hand and knee of a 14-year-old girl. The girl said she worked nights in a slaughterhouse.
Rebolledo was skeptical but she quickly learned that some of the children with chemical burns were falling asleep in class, unable to stay awake after working a night shift. Rebolledo drove to the plant where these children were employed and watched the night shift of Packers Sanitation Services Incorporated (PSSI), the company that cleans the slaughters. She found that some of the workers "were little. They looked young."
She returned with a team and a search warrant and found 102 minors at 13 different plants in eight different states.
Scott Pelley: Do you believe that 102 is the full extent?
Shannon Rebolledo: Not at all. I believe that the number is likely much higher.
In some cases, Rebolledo found 13-year-olds working who were identified by PSSI as being in their 30s.
PSSI paid the maximum fine after dropping its vow to "vigorously defend" itself.
The maximum fine? $1.5 million, which was about 1 percent of its cash on hand.
Praise the Lord and send the children to clean the slaughterhouses.
