I never thought about this risk:

"The tech companies are urging the Supreme Court justices to carefully approach Gonzalez v. Google, a case centered around whether online firms should be held liable for content they recommend to users."

The other story floating around is chatgpt and Microsoft changing search. I've logged on and have been playing with Chatgpt. I have to admit it's impressive and great fun.

I've found Chatgpt is better than Google for some things, especially if I have specific question. Like is Higgins actually Robin Masters? Google is a mess for something like that.

I admit I am tired of scrolling past 1, then 2, then 3, now sometimes 4 'ads' to get to my search result - which more and more often don'[t seem to address my intention anyway. I think Google used to be better, or perhaps I'm getting older and crankier.

In any event, since we have talked about Google being one of the fortresses and with a wide moat, I wonder if AI won't shake up the game, perhaps dramatically. This is a story in today's WSJ about Bing (always good for a punchline, as the article notes in the first paragraph), but how it delivers results with AI in textual language might a) be better or b) change how the Google ad-words technology works (if at all.)

I am reminded of how impregnable your local newspaper was until suddenly, poof, it wasn't. Anyway:

I try to be wary of reasoning by analogy (not accusing Goofy or anyone of doing this -- but I know I do it). Google is your local newspaper, if it was heavily invested in researching an emerging and potentially disruptive technology, had the enormous data set required to train it, and the budget to deploy it at scale.

I found the following useful (apologies for cross-posting, but it's relevant here)
https://www.wired.com/story/the-race-to-build-a-ch...

I'm not arguing that Google is 'invulnerable' or that language-based interaction with the internet isn't changing in interesting and challenging ways. Some of those ways might be disruptive; others might be pathological. For example, I hadn't considered the headache for established search engines of AI chatbots populating the web with "truthy" explanations and alternative facts.

AI PhD here.

An interesting problem going forward is that large scale datasets of images and text are will be increasingly polluted by AI output.

e.g. all the 'look at this thing chatgpt wrote!' posts on linkedin, all the shared images from MidJourney, Dall-E etc on Facebook.

As a general point, 'wrong and ugly answers from early AI' will be a problem for producing training sets for future AI.

It seems the wrong and ugly ones will likely be short lived and the overall size would be tiny compared to human generated and the good AI generated ones (which come from human generated).

This "The Economist" article gives a useful overview:

(I don't know whether it's behind a paywall or not; some "Economist" articles are free i think.)

It would be better for this thread to have been started with "OT:" but in any case this thread should gravitate towards the Google board:
https://www.shrewdm.com/MB?bid=9

Many of the authors writing at the Google board now are present here also, so you will still be in much the same company, but it is better to keep each board more focussed.
