When I was 16 my family traveled up from Panama, Canal Zone to the US. I have a vivid memory of Nicaragua, where armed men stood on either side of the bank's doors, full camo, armored vests, helmets, automatic rifles. I had never seen that before. I got to the US and never saw it. Over the years our police have become semi military. SWAT teams, etc. Let there be a disturbance and armored trucks roll around. Now, that's relatively

Polices forces snap it up, but then have to use it to justify the expense. At least part of the reason is that they are trying to protect officers from a heavily-armed public.
That practice should be halted nationwide. And the police forces should have to dispose of their armored vehicles and other military hardware. IMO.

It started with the War on Drugs methinks. I remember a long shoot out one afternoon in LA, the police were outgunned and I noticed the discussion and move toward heavier weapons. After 9-11 we were giving away military type vehicles, etc., presumably under 1033 which came about from the war on drugs. I'll watch it after I get a big chore done. :)
