NextEra Energy Inc. agreed to pay about $67 billion in stock for Dominion Energy Inc. in the biggest power acquisition ever, creating a giant utility extending from Florida to the data centers clustered in Virginia.

The deal would give NextEra a swathe of electricity assets stretching across Virginia and the Carolinas and position it as a dominant utility in a region that’s struggling to meet the surge demand from newly built artificial intelligence facilities.

The deal will “likely face a significant amount of regulatory scrutiny” from state bodies, as well as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Justice Department.

When I first moved to Virginia eons ago, I purchased a token amount of Dominion's stock that they offered directly to customers and then participated in the dividend reinvestment plan. Surprising how those drip-drips can add up over the years ;-) With datacenters sprouting up like dandelions all over northern Virginia, I wondered if Berkshire might be interested in Dominion Electric, especially after Berkshire had acquired Dominion's natural gas assets about six years ago for $10 billion. NextEra's $67 billion deal for Dominion shows that there are elephants lurking in the jungle.
