He is carrying out his project to consolidate authoritarian power against the trend of declining public support for his administration and himself.

Plan Steve, to reinvigorate the Trump hate parade: dump Vance as "too weak" (and miscegenated, but they won't say that, openly) and replace him with Sean Hannity. Hannity has been grooming the bigot base that his nibs plays to, for decades. Trump frequently confers with Hannity. May as well make the bromance legitimate. Hannity then can play the attack dog, full time, while his nibs relaxes on the golf course, reviewing his enemies list.
