Sure, a small yarmulke happens to cover a bald spot resulting in sun damage protection, but if that was the real reason for it it would cover the entire head! Plus, that wasn't the reason for it.

I wasn't there when the first guy realized a piece of skin kept his pate from frying.... or if he came up with a story that evolved to justify the skin so his cavemates wouldn't think he was a wuss.
