Name one who cancelled elections. Hitler, Mussolini Putin and Orban didn’t.
All Trump has to do is follow their lead by taking a number of small steps to ensure that the wrong people don’t vote or have their votes count.

Thought it was understood I was referring to the time before the Southern Strategy, which is denied by all Republicans. :)
The Brits love to say they ended slavery without a war - which is true, but that was because the slaves were kept in line by the British Military. Not so with the USA. We had institutions down south, like the Citadel, that taught military tactics to quell slave uprisings, so we did it ourselves, whereas the Brits, etc., used their military. They did compensate for slaves which was finally paid off in 2015. The slaves were apprenticed for 4-6 years, but at least no war.

And the GOP was the great supporter of civil rights. The Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act passed with a higher percentage of Congressional GOP votes, than Dem. We old phartz remember how powerful Betty Ford's support for the Equal Rights Amendment was. Then the GOP seized the banner of hate, and here we are. I remember when Mitt Romney was running for POTUS and spoke admiringly of his dad, when Gov of Michigan, joining in civil rights marches. Mitt was promptly flamed by much of the GOP.

The Southern Democrats felt betrayed. I remind you that LBJ was a Democrat, and he pushed the CRA through. At the time he said the Dems had lost the South for a generation. Turns out it has been three generations and counting. Racism and segregation was more important to the Southern Dems than any other issue, and they became Southern Repubs within just a few years.
Dems have since seized the banner(s) of equal rights regardless of ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender...I assume it's a similar mindset for Reps to oppose those things that drove the Southern Dems to become Southern Reps.
Kinda pathetic, really. They didn't get their segregation back, they didn't get their overturning of Love (miscegenation), but they did get made more irrelevant as they were RIF'ed into unemployment while CEOs reap ever-larger salaries and bonuses. And an ever-larger national debt to pay for all those tax cuts for rich people. Basically, they got nothing. And yet they keep voting "R".
And I'm speaking as a former "R" myself, though I was too young to remember the CRA passage.
