I believe Santa is using them in place of lumps of coal this year.

Ironically, they've turned out do be a decent speculative investment so far. The resale price on the secondary market for even the lowest priced cards is still roughly double the mint price - even accounting for the transfer payment. And since purchasers had a non-zero chance of getting a rarer card, so far buying a bunch of Trump Cards would have been a positive EV move. I don't expect that to last - the resale price has been falling steadily from the short-term spike. But sadly, getting a Trump NFT in your stocking would probably be a pretty valuable thing right now.

Of course you are correct, and unfortunately, not all that surprising.

But a lump of coal turned into a diamond under pressure of an outside influence still remains just a lump of carbon, only given higher market value by the beholders.

A polished turd is still a turd, just shinier. Trump cards, sadly, do seem to have that same shiny value.

As Gregory Alan Isakov laments to his muse in 'The Stable Song'

'Turn me back into that wild haired gale
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal.'

I think it came already. It happened when his organization got convicted for tax fraud. That imposes some serious financial consequences, since it will limit his channels for accessing capital. My brother thought that's what triggered the chintzy NFT issue, but I suspect that was more than a few weeks in the making.

It's hard to see anything landing against him personally. Maybe there's something that might stick in the MAL docs case, but I'm skeptical.

I did like his closed southern border.

Except it wasn't closed, not even close.

But I have been wondering, with all of the various countries in the world, Europe, Asia, are there *any* which have a completely sealed border?

There have been walls through history, of course, the Great Chinese Wall which eventually fell to invaders, and Hadrian's Wall between what is now Great Britain and Scotland, but that was barely 4 feet tall and pretty useless.

And there was the Berlin Wall we're all familiar with, although that ringed just a city (and didn't last half a century).

But my question is, except for natural barriers (Britain is an island, largely impassible rivers or mountain ranges, etc.) are there countries which have a continuous, solid wall between them, or do they rely on checkpoints on major roads and surveillance of other, more remote areas? Does anybody here know?

'Border Crossings 3 Times Higher Under Biden Than Trump'
snip
'Data from the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) and Office of Field Operations (OFO) compiled by Newsweek show that the average number of encounters under Biden reached totals of roughly 189,000 per month, compared to an average of just under 51,000 per month during the Trump presidency.

The rate is so significant that Biden, in fewer than two years, has already wracked up over one million more illegal crossings than Trump did throughout his entire administration'including more than 2 million crossings in 2022 alone.'

I'm not sure I understand this. Every analysis I have seen says that most immigrants contribute more in taxes than they cost (especially because they are not eligible for welfare, social security, etc.) and that by the second generation their children become fully 'Americanized'.

I read that to mean they become productive members of society, holding jobs, paying taxes, contributing to their communities.

Do you have a lot of research that says otherwise? (I'd appreciate *actual* research, rather than quotes from radio talk shows and the like. Thanks.)

Yes, you are correct it was the fact at one time, but fast forward to today, the past two years. Record amount of illegals are crossing our southern border at a alarming amount each day.

https://www.wola.org/2022/06/weekly-u-s-mexico-bor...

'CBP has encountered 2,150,370 illegal immigrants crossing the border so far in FY22.
In August, there were 203,597 illegal crossings.
There have been 18 consecutive months of over 150,000 illegal border crossings.
Over 10,000 pounds of deadly fentanyl has been seized at the border this year.
This month, CBP is encountering up to 8,000 illegal immigrants each day.
Since President Biden took office, roughly 3.5 million illegal immigrants have attempted to cross the border'

My intention here is to present the overwhelming amount of illegal border crossings each day.
So who is paying for the Security at the the Border? US tax dollars. Who is feeding, handing out warm clothing and blankets? US tax dollars. Who is busing, train and plane to other parts of the Country? US tax dollars. Churches and other organizations are doing what they can do to help, but they are overwhelm. Who are hiring the border crossers? I don't see the vast help wanted signs coming down. What skills do they have? Can they speak English?

'The final rule applies to noncitizens requesting admission to the U.S. or applying for lawful permanent residence (a 'green card') from within the U.S. When assessing whether a noncitizen is 'likely to become primarily dependent on the government for subsistence,' DHS will not penalize individuals who choose to access the vast majority of health-related benefits and other supplemental government services available to them, including most Medicaid benefits (except for long-term institutionalization ' such as residing in nursing home ' at government expense) and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). DHS will also not consider non-cash benefits provided by other government agencies including food and nutrition assistance such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): disaster assistance received under the Stafford Act: pandemic assistance: benefits received via a tax credit or deduction: and government pensions or other earned benefits. Receipt of cash-based benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and other similar programs, will not automatically exclude an individual from admission or green card eligibility, and will instead be considered in a 'totality of the circumstances' analysis.'

Which is all well and good. Isn't this is what America is all about?
BUT....How do we take care of our own and the millions who have crossed into America and the millions more who will come if Title 42 goes away?

What skills do they have? Most have none. They end up in US agriculture doing jobs most Americans would refuse to do (especially for the pay offered). Meanwhile, they pay taxes (but cannot benefit from any benefits, as noted further up the thread). In reality, we're exploiting them. They aren't coming here taking away tech jobs, or office staff. They clean our hotel rooms and harvest our lettuce.

But all this could be solved if someone had the cojones to reform our policies so that we had migrant worker visas. Then we would know who is here, where they are, the work would get done, and they could avail themselves of police protection (right now they are afraid to call because they could be deported). But for reasons I still don't really understand, that's a political non-starter. So we throw money at fake solutions pretending that we're "fighting illegal immigration", and they keep coming across the border anyway.

Caveat: actually, most illegal immigrants are the result of overstaying legal visas. Not people hiking across the desert. The migrant worker visa would NOT solve that aspect of the problem.

This article is from 2019, but I suspect the situation remains the same.

https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/...

But in the past 10 years, visa overstays in the United States have outnumbered border crossings by a ratio of about 2 to 1, according to Robert Warren, who was for a decade the director of the statistics division at the agency that has since been renamed U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and who is now a senior visiting fellow at the Center for Migration Studies, a New York'based organization.

Far from it. Your article is so yesterday's news.

snip
'Migrant border crossings in fiscal year 2022 topped 2.76 million, breaking previous record'

'For the 12 months ending Sept. 30, 2022, CBP stopped migrants more than 2,766,582 times, compared to 1.72 million times for fiscal 2021, the previous yearly high. The 2022 numbers were driven in part by sharp increases in the number of Venezuelans, Cubans and Nicaraguans making the trek north, according to CBP.'

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/migra...

Border towns and cities have been begging Biden to see the crisis for himself and to do something about the overwhelm border towns and Border agents. Take El Paso for instance....Migrants have set up their own tent cities along the streets hampering the locals same as what is happening in other cities such as LosAngeles.
And now Biden will finally visit the Border today. Before hand though, the Biden brigade cleaned up the streets and chased who knows where the migrants away. Biden will not see the real picture of what is happening.

So sad, too bad for the American Citizens who live in the border towns and working ranches along the border.

Stopped.

From your linked article: "Because of Covid restrictions that have caused officials to return border crossers to Mexico, many individuals make 'multiple border crossing attempts, which means that total encounters somewhat overstate the number of unique individuals arriving at the border,' said CBP in a statement."

Also, president Biden is visiting the southern border today: https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/08/politics/joe-biden-...

"With his visit to El Paso, Texas, on Sunday, Biden is seizing on an issue that's been a political liability for his administration, while calling on Congress to overhaul the US immigration system to meet current needs."

No doubt the new House leadership will get right on this.

As the other poster said: "stopped". That's how many folks we prevented from entering the country.

Meanwhile the most recent data I can find says we have over 1/2 million visa overstays.

https://www.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/2021-12/CB...

Plus some more data:
https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2021/04/13/k...

I live in a border state. What most people around here are clamoring for is not a wall, but reform. Yes, stem the flow of migrants across the border, but also reform how we do visas, and introduce a migrant worker visa. But, as I said before, that appears to be a non-starter for the right-wing. They appear to prefer playing "whack-a-mole".

What's the answer to those republicans saying that the Dems failed to pass such immigration reform over the last two years? Too many other more pressing issues? Wouldn't a majority in the House at least have voted for it? Would Sinema and/or Manchin not have been on board in the Senate?

I honestly don't know. They haven't had a filibuster-proof majority in a while. And within the Dem party I think there are factions. The Reps just want to keep everyone out, so I get them. Why the Dems didn't at least push some legislation for debate, I don't know. Albaby says no matter what position is taken, someone will experience heat and pain. To me that's not a reason not to do it. Obamacare resulted in that, but people like the provisions (generally) now that it has passed, and trying to repeal it is death in some quarters. I think immigration reform would be similar.

A bill would require 10 republican votes in the Senate. There was never much stomach for working to pass a separate immigration bill in the House that would die in the Senate. Dems tried to avoid the death knell of a Senate filibuster by putting immigration reforms into a party-line budget bill but the Senate's rulekeeper said nope.

What's the answer to those republicans saying that the Dems failed to pass such immigration reform over the last two years?

Immigration reform requires 60 votes in the Senate, as does anything else that can't be included in a budget reconciliation package. That would have required all Democrats and 10 Republicans in the last Senate. It would require all Dems and nine Republicans in the new one. Republicans generally support more border security but not the reforms Democrats want as part of a grand bargain.

The best opportunity came in 2013, when the "Gang of Eight" in the Senate -- four from each party -- sponsored a package that included a path to citizenship for Dreamers -- those born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrants -- various visa and migrant labor reforms, and 40,000 new border control agents. It passed the Senate 68-32 with all Democrats and 14 Republicans voting yes. The House, then controlled by Republicans under Speaker John Boehner, never brought it to the floor.

Republican members of the Gang of Eight took a lot of heat from their base for their support. John McCain died, Jeff Flake retired, and Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham no longer support a grand bargain like that one.

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fox-new...

Fox News? I know what you are thinking. You will not get the same footage and information from the MSM.

Perhaps because it's lousy reporting by Fox and a poorly written article?

For example, the headline implies 500,000 migrants were released into the US but the article says: "Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources have told Fox that there have been more than 500,000 encounters already this fiscal year..."

What exactly are "encounters"? The article offers no definition but it does state that of those 500,000 encountered, "162,547 have been expelled under Title 42". So there wasn't a mass release of 500,000, then, since at least 162,547 individuals were expelled?

Also, your article is almost a month old.

Finally, republicans have no desire to solve the southern border problems. It's their cudgel. Had they any interest, they would have tackled immigration when they control the House, the Senate and the White House. But all they wanted then was money for a useless wall that the president promised Mexico would fund.

LM is correct that it's not a priority for the Dems, at least not since Obama (as the other poster mentioned). But for all the fire and bluster from the Reps, you'd think they would do something when they had power. They didn't. A wall is not an answer (just ask the Chinese...they built a really big one, garrisoned with troops, and it still didn't work well). Most of any decline before Biden can be attributed to COVID (i.e. no jobs for them to do).

I think it's just a really hard issue, one that involves a lot of conflicts between different values that divide the constituencies in both parties. Whether it's a priority or not, neither Dems nor Reps have a solution or preferred policy outcome that enough of their party can rally behind. Large swatches of both parties will prefer the status quo to any specific proposed change - which makes it really, really hard to get anything that can find 60 votes. Which makes it really unlikely that either party will invest a lot of political capital on legislation

LurkerMom asks...

Which Party has been in control the past two years?

Democrats. Slim margins, though. As I explained upthread, the Democratically-controlled House had hoped to attach immigration reforms to a $1.7-trillion package to fund the government that passed the Senate, but were blocked by a rules decision that said it could not be in a spending package. Other proposals were offered, like the Tillis and Sinema framework which was nixed by Chip Roy of Texas who said securing the border should not be coupled with any pathway to citizenship.

How is it the republicans fault for the Biden border crisis?

Nobody, but as long as you mentioned it, when Trump made border security and immigration enforcement a rallying cry of his campaign and then his presidency, his misguided policies, political stunts and failure of leadership created the conditions that allowed the asylum problem at the border to explode into a crisis. A wall was always a stupid idea and a non-starter.

BTW, when Obama and Biden left office, 303,916 migrants were arrested by the Border Patrol, the lowest level in more than three decades.

Why were El Paso streets cleaned up and camping migrants chased away before Biden's visit?

Non-Fox News/OAN, Newsmax link, please.

Why did border control begin its collapse two years ago?

You mean what changed back when Trump fumbled the pandemic response and America lost 20 million jobs and during Biden first year in office when the job market roared back to life?

Who stopped the building of the border wall?

Mexico. Weren't we promised that they were going to pay for it?

Who initiated the open border policy upon becoming president?

There is no 'open border policy'. In fact, Title 42 is still in place.

Who signed executive orders reversing Trump's effective immigration policies?

You mean the racist travel bans preventing nationals of Muslim-majority and select African countries from entering the United States? Or reversing the withdrawal of federal funding from so-called sanctuary states? Or reversing Trump's actions to dismantle the DACA program? Be specific, because those were the right decisions and actions.

Why did reversing the Trump policies lead to chaos and lawlessness at the southern border?

Those policies were not significantly related to the recent rise in migration. One significant reason for the uptick in migration is the COVID-19 pandemic, which initially caused a brief lull in migration in 2020. Economic aftershocks post-pandemic worsened already-fragile living conditions for many people in the Americas, pushing them to migrate in greater numbers. Biden was creating millions of new jobs in a recovering economy, making migration even more appealing. Plus, the countries of origin of migrants entering the U.S. have changed over the past decade to now include large numbers of migrants from other countries like Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, and even Ukraine. So, more migrants.

Why did it take five decades for Biden to visit the southern border?

Unlike Trump, Biden is much less a photo-op president.

Why are Texas ranchers calling 'Biden's obligatory border visit a little too late'?

Is that a serious question? Or is that one of today's GOP talking points?

Why did CNN finally admit Biden hasn't taken immigration seriously?

Couple of reasons: first, conservative media mogul John Malone purchased CNN's parent company, Warner Media, last year; second, Chris Licht took over this year as president of CNN to drive the network's rightwing-leaning vision. In short, CNN's new leadership wants the network to appeal to Fox viewers. Of course, that's never going to happen. Fox News has that sewn up. As Republicans move further down the rabbit hole of authoritarianism, CNN will never be able to satisfy their craving for conspiracy theories and lies.

Facts, data and logic are no longer relevant to the Republican base.

No problem. I'll do the homework for you.

'In the week before President Joe Biden's trip to El Paso, Texas, Customs and Border Protection officers, as well as El Paso city police, began arresting migrants sleeping in the streets outside a Catholic church shelter and bus station, according to new video obtained by NBC News.
The person who shot the videos, a volunteer at the shelter, estimated to NBC News that approximately 100 to 150 migrants had been arrested and that more migrants sleeping by the bus station were taken into custody later in the week.'

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/video...

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/video...

c o 'BTW, when Obama and Biden left office, 303,916 migrants were arrested by the Border Patrol, the lowest level in more than three decades.'

Shrug....
The illegal aliens crossing our southern border exploded AFTER Biden became president and reversed the Trump policies.

c o 'You mean what changed back when Trump fumbled the pandemic response and America lost 20 million jobs and during Biden first year in office when the job market roared back to life?'

Oh please.... The job market roared back to life only because workers were RETURNING back to work after layoffs and business who temporally closed down due to the covid shutdown.

Who stopped the building of the border wall?

c o 'Mexico.'

Nope, Biden executive order ended border wall construction and redirected the project funds elsewhere.

c o 'There is no 'open border policy'. In fact, Title 42 is still in place.'

True. Upon orders of the Supreme Court title 42 is still enforced, but it has not stopped the horrendous flow of illegals crossing our southern border.

c o 'You mean the racist travel bans preventing nationals of Muslim-majority and select African countries from entering the United States? Or reversing the withdrawal of federal funding from so-called sanctuary states? Or reversing Trump's actions to dismantle the DACA program? Be specific, because those were the right decisions and actions.'

On July 16, 2021, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas held that the DACA policy 'is illegal.'

https://www.dhs.gov/deferred-action-childhood-arri...

Some countries were temporally ban from entering the US because of covid restrictions.
Why should US taxpayer monies be given to sanctuary states? They should fund their own policies.

Um, you mean the workers who returned to work following the pandemic.
Why are there Help Wanted signs all over across America? Where are the migrants who are suppose to fill these jobs? (no English? no skills? no kidding.)

Nice photo op of Biden standing in front of the Trump wall Biden defunded while visiting sanitized El Paso....

LurkerMom:

No problem. I'll do the homework for you.

Generally, the poster making claims is expected to support those claims. I'll ignore your links to the Washington Examiner and RT (seriously, you get your news from Russia & Former Soviet Union online?) and address the NBC link which states "that approximately 100 to 150 migrants had been arrested". Wow, 100 to 150. Not much of a round up. I thought there were thousand in the streets. Also from your linked article: "A Border Patrol official told NBC News those arrested had not been previously apprehended by Border Patrol when they crossed over from Juarez, Mexico. They were taken to El Paso's processing center for migrants, where they spent the night, the official said. From there they were either sent back to Mexico under Title 42..." IOW, business as usual.

Oh please.... The job market roared back to life only because workers were RETURNING back to work after layoffs and business who temporally closed down due to the covid shutdown.

Nope. Employment went from 152 million workers to 130 million workers during lockdown in 2020. By June 2020, 138 million Americans were back at work. When Trump left office 143 million Americans were back at work. Today, more than 153 Americans are working.

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/PAYEMS

On July 16, 2021, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas held that the DACA policy 'is illegal.'

Gee, a Texas court did that? Where's my shocked face. Funny, you didn't address the other items mentioned. And as Biden has acknowledged, Congress will have to do the work it's supposed to do and address immigration.

I see McCarthy is right on it. Oh wait, he's holding votes to rescind billions in funding to the IRS. If enacted, that add $114 billion to the national debt.

Ah, republicans are always worried about the national debt when a democrat is in the White House.

Why are there Help Wanted signs all over across America? Where are the migrants who are suppose to fill these jobs? (no English? no skills? no kidding.)

At 3.5% unemployment, the U.S. is close to full employment. Workers have more choices and are turning down jobs they don't want to take others they find more satisfying. Migrants are filling many of those jobs but many more migrants are being removed.

BTW, who do you think picks the crops you eat and works in the slaughterhouses? Mostly the "(no English? no skills? no kidding.)" people you mock.

Nope, Biden executive order ended border wall construction and redirected the project funds elsewhere.

There was virtually no border wall construction by Trump other than replacing sections that were falling apart. He added almost no new wall sections in four years and Mexico never paid a nickel.

Steve Bannon did manage to grift millions of dollars from the cult, though, a crime for which Trump pardoned him.

No mock intended, just the fact. Green Card holders have been working in America since eons ago. Most come according to the seasons for field work, then return home and back again next season. They are established migrant workers who fill most of these types of jobs.
Why are so many of the new migrants loitering city streets establishing their own tent cities? Why are they not being hired somewhere?

I doubt the Republican Party really wants a solution to the border mess. It's just too good as a vote getter and money generator.

The wall was always a stupid idea, but Trump got cheers and applause when he brought it up, so he ran with it. Waste of taxpayers money!

So many better ways that the money could have been used rather than on a silly symbolic piece of junk, that is easily defeated.

Remember, the GOP loves to stir up hate and fear; it works for them. Not solution oriented. All about retaining power; nothing else matters.

Be real. Our roughly 8 million doesn't mean we've got loads of niches that these bussed-up migrants can slip right into. First of all, NYC has record numbers of homeless people, enormous numbers. And we have received more than 17,000 bused migrants
since spring.

And I say, have some perspective. Apparently you were just fine with it as long as the migrants stayed out of sight in a Red State, but oh boy, there is a big problem if a ginourmous Blue city has to handle a tiny fraction of the total.

Where are you while this is going on in Eagle Pass, TX, Population 29,307.....

The area around Eagle Pass the hot spot for crossings, surpassing the Rio Grande Valley for migrant crossings in the last few weeks, according to Border Patrol officials.

Over the weekend, the USBP Del Rio Sector Chief Jason Owens said agents encountered 3,431 migrants, and over 600 migrants who eluded authorities.

How did Adams become aware of this disastrous mess?

Have you been keeping up with the number of illegal migrants crossing our southern border, overwhelming Border towns, damaging homes, outbuildings, crops in the field of ranches and farms, leaving tons of their garbage behind?

Adams became aware of the illegal migrant problem ONLY after these migrants were bused into NYC.
Are you aware NYC is a sanctuary city? Adams should be welcoming the migrants.
Instead Adams got a rude awaking when the Border towns problem became his problem.
Adams now has to anti up the money to house, feed, give medical attention and more for the migrants. It did not sit very well with him. He resort to begging D.C. for help.

Kudos for Adams finally realizing this is not only a NYC problem, nor Border states problem, it is America's problem.

Hopefully more democrats will join up with Adams and republicans to find solutions to control, to protect and close our open border.

And I say'there's no value in putting your words in my mouth. I'm not at all "just fine" with anything about the tsunami of migrants trying to find safety and sustenance in the US. Those who have been busing them to DC and NYC etc aren't doing it because that's the most helpful locations for these migrants and it significantly lessens the burden on border cities, but because they're using political theater to make news-catching statements. And not because they truly want to help these people. They want it all to disappear. Which it's not going to do. It's a complex and terrible situation. Walls and buses won't solve anything. Republicans and Democrats have to get together and get real and create helpful, workable policies and regulations that reflect center on the realities, not the politics and prejuices.

Hopefully more democrats will join up with Adams and republicans to find solutions to control, to protect and close our open border.

It might be more helpful to lobby Republicans.

Last week, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators did a fact-finding tour of border towns in Texas and Arizona. It included John Cornyn of Texas, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, James Lankford of Oklahoma and Jerry Moran of Kansas on the Republican side. Democrats included Mark Kelly and (newly independent) Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Chris Coons of Delaware.

The idea, as it was for a similar group a decade ago, is to assemble a package that features a lot more money for border security along with fixes for broken parts of the U.S. immigration system, including new resources for immigration courts, processing asylum claims, and a path to citizenship for those born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrants.

A decade ago, Republicans cried "Amnesty!" over the path to citizenship for Dreamers and never gave the bill a hearing in the House. It's not clear the latest effort can get nine Republican votes in the Senate to move it along, but even if it does, the dynamic in the House looks very similar to 2013.

One possible incentive for Republican support of a functional asylum system: Refugees from countries run by left-wing authoritarians -- including Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua -- tend to become Republican voters, as the reddening of Florida indicates.

Republicans again control the House. Again the Speaker faces revolt from the more extreme members of his conference for any cooperation with Democrats. The question remains whether they will be willing to engage in the ancient political art of compromise to get the robust border security provisions they say they want.

LurkerMom: The Border crisis fix can start with our president reversing his open border policies and give the Border Agents what they need...

Nonsense.

The Trump administration made funding requests for Customs and Border Protection averaging $15.5 billion a year

For fiscal year 2022, the Democratic-controlled Congress appropriated $16.5 billion for the agency, a higher budget than the four enacted under Trump. Biden requested $14.8 billion for 2023. The Senate proposed $16.5 billion, the House $15.7 billion.

The number of Border Patrol agents peaked at 21,000 under Obama. During the Trump administration the numbers were between 19,430 and 19,740. So far under Biden the numbers have been between 19,338 and 19,536. Agent turnover predates the Biden administration. Biden's administration has requested $95 million from Congress to hire 300 additional Border Patrol agents in fiscal year 2023.

And nothing much else has changed at the southern border, either.

Immigration policies at the border under Biden and Trump have stayed largely the same. Border authorities are still enforcing immigration laws; immigrants continue to be expelled, detained or allowed into the country if they pass officials' initial screenings.

Title 42, a public health policy enacted under Trump to limit COVID-19's spread, remains in place under the Biden administration.

The Biden administration has also provided funding to reinforce existing barriers and add specialized technology at the border, including cameras, lighting and other detection technology.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which Biden signed into law in November 2021, appropriated about $430 million to CBP for the construction and modernization of land ports of entry and $3 billion for "critical investments" to Border Patrol stations.

Biden has done far more than Trump ever did with respect to the southern border. In fact, president Biden secured an agreement from Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador to spend $1.5 billion over the next two years to improve 'smart' border technology.

The Biden administration secured border funding from Mexico after years of failed attempts by former president Trump.

Finally, although "encounters" are at or near record highs, encounters are not individuals. For example, a Border Patrol agent could have encountered the same person three times.

That's fine.
The difference is Biden's border policy vs Trump's border policy is apples and oranges.
Border Agents now under Biden are overwhelmed and find it practically impossible to control because of Biden open border policy.

Why is that?

Only because the Supreme Court and not Biden kept Title 42 in place. If the SC had not acted on it Biden most surely would have struck down Title 42.

CO: 'The Biden administration has also provided funding to reinforce existing barriers and add specialized technology at the border, including cameras, lighting and other detection technology.'

And how is that working?
The Biden Administration threaten to sue Arizona if they did not remove the shipping container wall they started building. Gov Ducey had the barrier erected to combat illegal migration into his state.
Ya well, thanks Biden

From the notoriously libertarian CATO institute:

President Biden has not suddenly ended America's immigration prohibition and opened up U.S. borders to almost anyone who wants to come (as was largely America's immigration policy from 1776 to 1924). Instead, he has far more vigorously enforced immigration prohibition than the law requires, narrowing the few exceptions to the universal ban on legal immigration.

Like they say on TV, but wait! There's more!

The Biden administration has smashed all records for immediate expulsions without due process, increasing the rate from 62,000 per month under Trump to about 100,000, but Mexico will only take back its own citizens, Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Salvadorans, and even for the Central Americans, it will not take back young kids with their parents if it has no place for them to stay

And, if you act in the next 20 minutes, we'll throw in

Don't believe them? Well, the Trump administration faced the exact same constraints, and they too released many thousands of immigrants from the border. But Biden has a much greater challenge now to keep up his closed border policies. The number of immigrants arriving from outside Mexico and Central America has exploded in the last few months, increasing from about 10,000 to more than 62,000 per month, requiring farther flights and more resources.

It's a complicated problem, but stacking shipping containers which can be cut through with a $99 sawzall from Home Depot isn't among them.

https://www.cato.org/blog/bidens-border-policy-not...

I understand that Southern border states have a problem that is overwhelming their resources. Of course Northern states have problems that Southern states don't have, like, oh, snow removal, but nobody asks Arizona to chip in for that to help Vermont. Still, I have to wonder if most countries are protected by a 'Berlin Wall' type thing all along their borders? What do the experiences of, say, Poland and Belgium and Syria and South Africa tell us about land-locked neighbors? I'd really like to know how others handle this problem.

(Obviously ours is greater because of the vast economic disparity between the US and its Southern neighbors. But watching Fox News and radio talk shows for answers are probably the worst possible ways to find out anything truly useful.)

Per your post....' The number of immigrants arriving from outside Mexico and Central America has exploded in the last few months, increasing from about 10,000 to more than 62,000 per month, requiring farther flights and more resources.'

Um, not the past few months but the past two years. Why is that? What messages are migrants getting and from who to come here in record numbers, not only from South America but from around the world via our southern border?

snip
'Texas Launches Elite Taskforce To Combat Biden's Record Gotaways

December 9, 2022 | Austin, Texas | Press Release

Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the Texas National Guard are continuing to work together to secure the border; stop the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas; and prevent, detect, and interdict transnational criminal behavior between ports of entry.

Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to over 333,000 migrant apprehensions and more than 22,000 criminal arrests, with more than 20,000 felony charges reported. In the fight against fentanyl, DPS has seized over 354 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission.'
snip
'Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration's refusal to secure the border. Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Biden's open border policies.'

https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/texas-launches-eli...

This is the roll the Biden administration should be doing, not Texas nor any other state.

As indicated, the Cato Institute is a notoriously libertarian think tank. Their numbers may jive(?) but end results tell a different story.

I'll take the word of what is really happening from the people in Texas and other Border States, not a libertarian think tank.

An anti-immigrant stance has been part of the zeitgeist of southern border states, and the portrait they paint is colored by this. The Cato think tank does thorough objective reserch before they issue a report. I'll take that any day as my source for facts I know I can trust.

You also have to keep in mind that the numbers of attempted crossings is seriously inflated. The people who are turned back have fled lives of danger and poverty for themselves and families, and are hoping to find safety and income in the U.S. A great many, when the are turned back at the border, simply try again'and again and again and again'to get across. And each re-attempt is counted by border officials as yet another new illegal migrant trying to get into the US.

What's needed is not a still-stricter system for keeping people out. Our immigration system is broken. That is frustratingly and frighteningly clear. And it has to be fixed so that it is both workable and humane. The multiple elements that comprise it have to be addressed. It will take a collaborative (not pointlessly antagonistic) effort of both parties that ignores emotional and biased rhetoric, sets a realistic goal for how long it should take to reconstruct, and ensure adequate funds to implemeneting it effectively.

Perhaps because the southern border states are taking the blunt of the influx of migrants and think to themselves, 'enough is enough'.
Tent communes on main streets, hospital and ER's filled with migrants instead of locals, food pantries cannot keep up with the demand, various help groups and churches are overwhelm.

Libertarian principals are fine and good in their place but not when small border towns are basically being invaded by migrants. Even NYC cannot handle their small numbers of migrants in comparison to what the border towns are enduring.

Point your finger at NYC, Martha's Vineyard, D C etc and their anti-immigrant stance.

I'm talking about wayyyy before this got started. I'm talking about a perspective on life in general, not a reaction to specific unusual circumstances. But I'm just preaching to the choir here, sadly.

At the risk of returning this discussion back to the thread title, the floor price for Trump NFT's has consistently been above the initial purchase price, and is (as of time of writing) now over $500:

https://www.coingecko.com/en/nft/trump-digital-tra...

That's just the price of the cheapest cards - the rarer ones trade for even higher. So I guess buying Trump NFT's would have been a decent money maker, at least in the very short term.

<I liked that Mexico paid for it!>

Who is paying for the chaos happening at the open border now?

Hope I'm not going too far back, or duplicating someone else's response. Apologies if I am.

Mexico never paid a cent for the segments of old wall that were replaced '- which is all that Trump's wall ever consisted of anyway. His promise that he'd get Mexico to pay for it was an empty one.

And so?
At least Trump tried to stop the flow of migrants into America with the policies he had in place, the same policies Biden did away with on day one of his presidency.

I see here all the defensive praises for Biden and his laughable closed border policies he put in place and yet the massive flow of migrants entering America continues every day along with all the deadly drugs, and now the Cartel gangs setting up shop all across America.

LurkerMom: At least Trump tried to stop the flow of migrants into America with the policies he had in place, the same policies Biden did away with on day one of his presidency.

That's complete nonsense.

From the Cato Institute: President Biden has not suddenly ended America's immigration prohibition and opened up U.S. borders to almost anyone who wants to come (as was largely America's immigration policy from 1776 to 1924). Instead, he has far more vigorously enforced immigration prohibition than the law requires, narrowing the few exceptions to the universal ban on legal immigration.

For example, one exception is for those facing persecution in their home countries. Biden has undisputed authority under the law to admit as many refugees from abroad as he wants. The president sets the limit and picks whoever he considers 'of concern' to the United States. Yet Biden is on pace to admit the fewest refugees in the history of the U.S. refugee program, fewer than 10,000.

LurkerMom: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/americans-most-dang...

LinkedIn? Had you actually read the unpublished "article," you'd have seen the sources and data date back to 2008. Certainly the Trump administration had access to that same information and took decisive action against those notorious gangs.

Oh wait.

LurkerMom: https://www.dea.gov/sites/default/files/2018-07/di...

The report in this link is from 2015. Again, the entire Trump administration had access to the data and did what, exactly?

Evidently the information is only important now because everything that's ever happened is Biden's fault.

co or is it NE: 'That's complete nonsense'.

Tell me all about the massive amount of of migrants entering America every day under Biden as compared to when Trump was President.

And how about the Biden 'gottaways' staggering numbers?

'Over 73,000 'gotaways' at southern border in November, highest ever recorded'
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/73000-gotaways-so...
Snip
' The number of gotaways for November means that there are already over 137,000 gotaways so far this fiscal year, which began in October. In FY2022 there were nearly 600,000 gotaways. There were 389,155 gotaways at the border in FY2021.
The November numbers means that there have been an average of at least 2,400 people evading Border Patrol every day.'

Tell me about Biden's policy curtailing the 'gottaways'.

Who are these gottaways evading Biden's laughable border policys? Rapist? murderers? Thieves?
drug runners? slave runners? pimps? Cartel gang members? The list goes on.

So much for Cato 'few exceptions to the universal ban on legal immigration.'

Yes....and how about those gotaways?

If we look at Politifact, we learn a few actual....facts. You should check it out.
https://www.politifact.com/article/2022/dec/09/nik...

= "Nikki Haley cites unverified number of border 'got aways,' official data is scarce with limitations"

= "The number of 'got aways,' people who cross the border without being stopped, is officially published only once a year and represents data from two fiscal years back."
So if the got aways figures published annually are from 2 fiscal years back, this means that the huge numbers''if they're real''occurred during Trump's years.

And more....

= "DHS estimates the number of "got aways" based on Border Patrol agents' observations, what they hear from other immigrants who were apprehended, footprints, cameras and sensors.

DHS estimated there were about 137,000 "got aways" in fiscal year 2020. In April, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told lawmakers that in fiscal year 2021 there were about 389,000 "got aways."

DHS' latest report acknowledged that the subjective way the data is gathered can be problematic. It said it's working to enact a standard to ensure Border Patrol agents' reporting is as accurate as possible."
