Just kidding, Trump is incapable of learning.

The Famous Prophecy

After showering the temple with lavish gifts, Croesus asked if he should attack the Persians. The Pythia (the priestess) gave a famously cryptic response:"If Croesus goes to war, he will destroy a great empire."

Overjoyed and convinced that the "great empire" in question was Persia, Croesus crossed the Halys River and launched his attack.

The Twist

The invasion was a disaster. Croesus was defeated at the Battle of Pteria and eventually captured when the Persians besieged his capital, Sardis.

When Croesus later sent a messenger back to Delphi to complain that the god Apollo had deceived him, the Oracle replied that he had only himself to blame. The prophecy had been accurate: by going to war, Croesus did destroy a great empire—his own.

Note: Modern historians often view these stories as cautionary tales about hubris (excessive pride) and the ambiguity of divine fate, rather than literal transcriptions of historical events.
