I always wondered why octopus-like robots were not worth the effort (hydraulics rather than mechanics). I guess there is an argument for humanoid robots if they have to live in a human environment or act as "friends" to demented humans, otherwise arachnids and insects provide more stability and other attributes.

Mechanism is only half of it - once AI's are embedded (or connected to) robots, far more is possible.
