Or, rather, not necessarily in Rotterdam. We may be "between cruises" for a bit over a week in Rotterdam. We've been to Bruges, Amsterdam, Ghent, Brussels. I'm thinking of taking a train somewhere. Maybe a small loop for the week-plus. Luxemburg? Cologne? Any suggestions? This would be late Nov into early December, if we actually do this.

The first cruise is to Norway, mostly. We could always skip that bit and fly to Norway on our own, and then get to Rotterdam to catch the transatlantic ship. I don't like driving in foreign countries, but we almost certainly would have to rent a car if we flew to Norway.

I have two recommendations for Cologne. The first is a museum of roman/germanic artifacts:
https://roemisch-germanisches-museum.de/Homepage
I was amazed at the glass bottles and beads they had displayed. Lots of info on what life was like "on the border" between the Roman empire and the wilds of Germany.

Second, the Kathe Kollwitz museum:

20th century, sculpture and prints. I first learned about her through the amazing sculptures she had done in the cemetary of her son, lost in WW1:

Cologne is a very cool town. There was a massive pride parade through the city the day I was there.

One(?) reason to visit Luxembourg City is that Patton is buried in the military cemetary there. Actually, any US cemetary in Europe is worth visiting.

Rgds,
HH/Sean

We loved Haarlem. Our plan was to use it as a base for visiting Amsterdam, but it turned out there was so much to see and do--and shop and eat!--that we never made it into Amsterdam. Take a tour of the canal that surrounds Haarlem on an open 8-passenger boat captained by a local who knows everything about his city, enjoy the morning market in the town square, wander into the huge church there, visit the fine art museum. If you decide to go to Haarlem, I can give you the name of a terrific B&B.

Leiden and Utrecht are great, too. And Ghent. Public transportation to all of them is excellent.
