Is it misinformation when it is the government who misleads the country?
Panic must be maximized to get the obedience we demand.

'The official number [of Covid-19 deaths] is probably an exaggeration because it includes some people who had [the] virus when they died even though it was not the underlying cause of death,' the Times article read, explaining that both CDC data and a study in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases support the claim that 'almost one third of official recent Covid deaths have fallen into this category.'

No, that's not what the data suggest.
If you read the New York Times article, it says "recent Covid deaths," not all Covid deaths.
The article also says that recent Covid victims are disproportionately unvaccinated, Republican, and white.

Also, when the pandemic first hit, a lot of deaths were being classified as respiratory failures (or heart failures, or whatever). Which was true. But if -which apparently happened more than it should have- they didn't go into more detail, it wouldn't be classified as COVID. So the figures, at least in the first year, likely understated it. Which is why some folks started looking at "excess deaths" as a more accurate gauge of the pandemic.

I agree with you. Just to be clear, my post was intended to show there were and are legitimate questions about the numbers reported and the Ministry of Truth has no business colluding with big tech to suppress opinions that question their numbers.

Yeah, my two favorite COVID deaths were two dudes, may they rest in peace.
The first poor guy was in a motorcycle crash. He had COVID when he was hit by a car and died, so naturally the hacks wrote it down as "a COVID death".
Then there was the guy admitted to a hospital with something like a 0.4 BA level. The normal legal limit is .05 or something depending on where you live. This dude literally drank himself to death, but because he had COVID...it was a "COVID death".
You can't make this up. Unless of course you incentivize it, as the government did during the pandemic.
Pointing out dumb stuff like this got you called a conspiracy theorist back in the day on PA, that hotbed of science knowledge. LOL!

Pretty sad actually.

There are two sides to this. No, we don't want a Ministry of Truth (which, if you read the book, all ministries were named the opposite of their purpose, e.g. Ministry of Love is where torture occurred). At the same time, people like you and me cannot be well-informed if correct information isn't available. If you take your Earth Sciences from the Bible, you will be woefully misinformed. Genesis chapter 1 is not of comparable quality and reliability to the journal Nature. Which is why -much to the consternation of right-leaning folks- we challenge sources when they appear to be (or have proven to be) dodgy.**
A request that a company enforces its own terms of service is not unreasonable. No one imposed those terms, the company created the TOS itself. Of course, the company is under no obligation to enforce, and to my knowledge no one has the power to require them to do it. But you can always ask.
**I will note that this also applies to left-leaning folks, e.g. the lefty antivaxxers.

There were some problems, and some were tied to specific state(s), but the death reporting form was two tiered - per memory the top part of the form was used if the determination was made that Covid caused the death, but had lines for contributing other factors, and the bottom part of the form was used if the patient had Covid, but it didn't cause the death.
Covid kills by other means, so it can cause respiratory failures, pneumonia, etc. It can get the T cells to attack blood vessel lining and good lung tissue. It can cause heart attack and stroke. And some of it can be a rapid onslaught like Dengue hemorrhagic fever. I'm just not going to substitute my judgement for the medical professional that fills out the form, while every conspiracy nut will do just that. I expect some mistakes. I do remember some significant real controversies, but not what they were. But I think they were under Trump. ;P
