Perhaps the ensuing 4 year catastrophe for the debt, inflation, the stock market, and consumer prices will finally be enough to rouse America from its collective coma and lead to a wholesale rejection of all things MAGA and the dawning of a new Democratic run Golden Age?

but still got ~40% votes

The GOP has managed to get a real grip on their voters. 40% voting for that loony guy means a lot of people will hold their nose and vote Republican no matter what. Democrats are not nearly so monolithic.
