It appears, according to the WSJ, that Buffet will be delivering a Nov 10th Thanksgiving family and shareholder letter, characterized as an alternative to writing this years annual report letter. One week after Q3 earnings are released.

Any thoughts on why he might publish a letter like this?

Not to be morbid, but my guess is that he may have a terminal disease to announce. After all he is getting up there in age a bit. If that were true, I would guess that he would not like this information to come out as a leak, but to address it head on in a public way, with some sage advice. I hope I am wrong.

If that were the case, and the stock reacted strongly to the downside, I would hope that large buybacks would be on the menu.

Say it ain’t so!

My thought is that, if true, he would want to pack up his bags before eoy and not be seen as “coming in front of Greg” starting January 1. With his typical grace, he’s going to express gratitude for his 60 years at the helm.

To announce a dividend. “ An internet troll is a person who intentionally posts inflammatory, offensive, or disruptive content online to provoke emotional reactions and cause trouble. This behavior, known as trolling, is often done for amusement, attention, or to manipulate others, and can range from name-calling to spreading false information. The anonymity of the internet often enables people to behave this way without fear of real-world consequences, “ Priceless.

I think you're reading too much into it. He released similar letters shortly before Thanksgiving the last two years.

I'm not worried

Warren and Charlie both had several years to tutor and work with Greg. This gave them plenty of time to get to know Greg very well and to learn his strengths/weaknesses.
They both continued to have confidence in his abilities. This says a lot to me. Berkshire will always have its ups and downs, which may require an occasional adjustment in direction. Who better to captain our ship than Warren and Charlie's top pick?

My money stays with Berkshire. If the price drops, I'll buy more.

Thank you, Warren, thank you, Charlie, for so thoughtfully placing your partners in such capable hands!

Yeah, I look at it like Apple.

Steve Jobs was this brilliant inventor, and his hand-picked successor Tim Cook is an operations guy. There's been a lot of teeth-gnashing that Cook is not Jobs, but he's done a brilliant job.

At Berkshire Munger was the architect and Buffett the general contractor. Their hand-picked successor is an operations guy. There will be a lot of teeth-gnashing that Abel is not Buffett, but he'll do a brillant job too.

I'm optimistic that Greg will do a good job, but nowhere near as good as Buffett. Losing Buffett is like losing Andy Grove or David Packard, and we saw what happened to Intel and HP. A big test of how good Greg is will be his first major acquisition. Give someone $330 Billion in cash and T-Bills and he/she will spend it. The corporate record on acquisitions, even some of Buffett's, is poor.
