Since this comes up a lot, and Rational has just made all his articles free:

The S&P 500 is dominated by the "magnificent seven" which creates significant concentration risk. The S&P 500 equal weight index offers a possible alternative.

If we think of SPY and RSP as being two endpoints of an interval, then perhaps the optimal allocation (for a given person) is an intermediate point in that interval. For example, 40% SPY and 60% RSP.

Since the weighting is so concentrated, just buying RSP and then each of the 7 stocks in whatever weight makes you happy seems even easier.

Nice article,
The 20+ yr comparison of RSP vs S&P and breakdown of the 11 sectors.

My take on comparisons, {VERY ROUGHLY}switching now from SPY to RSP would DOUBLE my exposure to REAL ESTATE,MATERIALS,UTILITIES, & INDUSTRIALS while HALFING my exposure to COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY while leaving exposure to the remaining 5 sectors unchanged.

Is this change in exposure really what I want to do?

ciao
