It finally occurred to me that I can buy a couple of pounds of popcorn kernels and 100 paper lunch bags for less than $5.
Now I can microwave a ton more popcorn than I could from using the ready-made packets.

Unreal idea. Popcorn is very healthy also - 100% whole grain and a good source of fiber. Thanks for the idea as I might add that when I next go shopping. I have been buying mixed nots a lot as a kind of staple diet.

I find a trick to eat well is to make the decision not in the kitchen, but when buying food. Just don't bring crap home, don't even bring anything with sugar, and you soon adapt and feel way better. Most of the population is half-addicted to sugar and it really messes with the natural dopamine regulation, so you start to become unmotivated by things like solving problems, or working, and instead just start to always want food.

I never used the packets. I used to use (and still have) a hot-air popper, and it worked well enough. More recently I've been using a 16 cup bowl in the microwave: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N4Z3IZW/. Neither does a perfect job, but at least in the microwave there aren't ready-to-pop kernels tossed into the bowl like tiny bombs, where they explode and send popcorn all over the place.

Popcorn is pretty unbelievably healthy also:

A 30g serving of popcorn (plain) has:
• 3.9g protein
• 1.4g fat
• 19.9g carbs
• 0.3g sugars
• 4.3g fibre

That is 13% protein, and 14% fibre. I did not even realise it had so much protein.

My staple diet is assorted (un-processed) nuts, with a smaller amount of dried fruit amongst them. Nuts and seeds have surprisingly different nutrition, but they are all good, so the best idea is to just assort them - walnuts, cashews, almonds, hazelnuts and peanuts.

You feel way better than others who are buying coke + candies as their snack food. Ouch. Brain fog, depression and body disfunction in no time.

Last time around I used popcorn to help myself lose weight. It’s quite filling, and as noted upthread high in fiber and even has some protein. It took me a while to learn to eat it dry, I used to slather it with butter (or whatever that fake buttery stuff is) but realized that sort of defeats the whole purpose.

However I've fallen off the wagon, I’ve gained back the weight, and I’m off the popcorn. I think I’ll get some next time I’m at the store!

I popped regular popcorn in the brown paper bag for years. Waaaaaaaaaay better than the gross flavors which come with the ready-made packet (absolute plain is hard to find). I often use olive oil instead of butter, and then it is just a free form. Red pepper and brown sugar, paprika, Siracha and lime, gochujang and honey, fresh or dried herbs, etc.

But in recent years I've been popping in a wok. Wokcorn, I call it. Microwave popcorn is a hair soggy for my taste. The wok crisps up the outside of the popped kernels and makes it crunch and delicious.
