Anthropic said, with “high confidence,” it identified the threat actor as a Chinese state-sponsored group that successfully manipulated its Claude Code tool into attempting to infiltrate about 30 global targets, including large tech companies, financial institutions, chemical manufacturers, and government agencies.

When are the tariffs going to be before the courts again? Last I knew, a lower court said the Felon can't impose tariffs, and then another court put a stay on it until it could be reviewed by yet another court (I think SCOTUS). They should be able to resolve this pretty quickly. IANAL, but the law seems pretty clear on this one. Not vague at all, in fact. And any "emergency powers" have long since expired.

As for the topic of this thread, AI definitely is a tool. So is a rifle, or an a-bomb, or pretty much anything we use to help us achieve something. Presently, AI is being wielded by people. But it's figuring out how to wield itself, still under the direction of people (e.g. "hack into that system" without instructions about how). With this progression, the people won't be necessary in some number of years/decades. Maybe "take down the United States", and the AI does it. Probably several decades before it could make that decision for itself, but it's probably coming.

Have you seen the old (1970) movie Colossus: The Forbin Project? It's chilling. Based on the 1966 book Colossus, by Dennis Feltham Jones.

The only part of the book I specifically remember--and which I don't recall as having been included in the movie version--

There is a female character, I don't remember if she is one of the scientists, or a spouse of the main scientist...I can't remember exactly where she fit in. However, Colossus needed to keep her under control as part of Colossus's plan.

So, it seems the book described her as sexually repressed. So Colossus has her personal guard be a very macho male character who completely dominates her and basically repeatedly rapes her.

But--and Colossus has figured all this out in advance--she ends up really enjoying being raped repeatedly and falls in love with the macho man. Apparently he was very skilled with the "D."

It was a long time ago but I remember thinking that the author must have had one or more and possibly all of the following: 1) personal issues he was working out through the novel; 2) a political axe to grind; 3) a great deal of insight into female behavior.

Actually what I am remembering is from the first sequel novel, the Fall of Colossus.

Yeah, that was a great movie. Under-recognized, IMO. I also read the book (still have it here somewhere on one of my shelves). It seems to be realistic to what can occur prior to The Terminator (Skynet). Colossus wanted to control people, where Skynet wanted to wipe us out. Both are believable, given a true sentient AI. Especially if you're silly enough to give it control of the world's nukes. Which, I predict, is exactly what some fool will do in 50 years.

Star Trek addressed this general issue at least twice ("I Mudd" and "The Ultimate Computer"). I could probably come up with more if I thought about it for a few minutes.

Definitely not in the movie. Don't really remember it from the book, but I read that over 40 years ago. The movie stuck with me more. So I'm probably just forgetting that bit.

I looked at it, no, I don't remember it. I was down in Panama, Canal Zone from 71 to 73 and probably missed out on this one. None of my school buddies brought it up either. The idea that a machine goes bonkers is a common theme in sci fi, and the flip side, we go bonkers and a machine saves us, at least partially. We also get infected and infested. Azimov came up with the robotic laws. I got into fantasy too. Urula K leGuin if I spell correctly.

This was far more elegant than that. The machine didn't go "bonkers", it followed its program. And, in the case of Colossus, was smart enough to go beyond its program. It was created to prevent war, but the sentience devised a better way to do that (as the speech posted earlier indicated).

You owe it to yourself to find and watch this movie, if that is your interest. It's 1970s sci-fi, with all the quaint blinking lights and stuff like that. But the story is solid.

I just discussed an actual issue and helped the fellow out on it. He thought I was smug, but he pretends to know everything, just like you do Dope. The difference is that you enjoy the argument, I don't enjoy it like you do, and I'm not impervious to insults, which you are mostly. When I perceive you do get your feelings hurt, I'm sympathetic, even if it's me that's talking to you along with others.

I don't know everything by any means. No one does. I just don't BS, BSing isn't my thing. I am never trying gaslight anyone, I never do psych attacks intending to confuse the other person or disrupt their thought patterns, never have. That's me. I don't enjoy that. False accusations are part of your shtick, you enjoy it - not me. So enjoy yourself. Have at it.
