We're looking at Iceland next year. I'm thinking of basing in Reykjavik, and doing day-trips from there. Waterfalls, glaciers, etc.

Does anyone know if that's practical? Iceland is significantly larger than the Big Island. I usually base in Kona, and drive around from there. I'm not sure that is feasible in Iceland.

I guess it depends on how much driving you're willing to do, including on roads and under conditions that can change quickly. Even the closest glacier is around 2 hours away. There's also a fair amount of walking involved if you want to experience a good many sites up close. Guided tours could ease the logistics.

Have you considered Ireland?

Ireland is on my list of places to visit. And Scotland. Been to London, Windsor, Bath, Greenwich.

I've thought about guided tours. Still a lot of driving on their part. The cruise stops in two northern Iceland ports, and then Reykjavik. Maybe we need to plan to relocate at least once towards the south to see that area?

In addition to logistics, I can't really take in the scenery if I'm driving.

We're thinking of doing a mix in Iceland. Some tours, some days renting a car. There's an 11 hour tour of southern Iceland, for example. I don't want to drive 11 hours. But maybe the Golden Circle warrants going at our own pace.

We'll have six days there after the cruise, plus the few days/stops from the cruise itself.

Never been to Iceland. Isn't it one of the world's most expensive places?
Might want to pad your budget.

Apparently you can drive around Iceland in 17 hours (Ring Road?).

Yes, it is very expensive. They have to import a lot of stuff. But it's supposed to be spectacularly beautiful, and based on the photos I've seen, it is. So we're going. Maybe just this once in a lifetime. I can splurge a bit. Can't take it with me, and I don't care if I have an expensive funeral.
