FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — A historic lodge on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim has been destroyed by a fast-moving wildfire, the park said Sunday.

The Grand Canyon Lodge, the only lodging inside the park at the North Rim, was consumed by the flames, park Superintendent Ed Keable told park residents, staff and others in a meeting Sunday morning. He said the visitor center, the gas station, a waste water treatment plant, an administrative building and some employee housing were among the 50 to 80 structures lost.

This is so sad. The North Rim is a wonderful place; so much quieter than the South Rim. More beautiful, too. We've had some wonderful vacations there and have stayed several times in the old stone cabins that sit right on the edge of the rim. The lodge was a lovely old building, built in 1937 as a replacement for the first lodge that had also burned down.

The fire also impacted the water treatment facility resulting in the escape of large amounts of chlorine gas, necessitating the evacuation of people from parts of the inner canyon.

It will no doubt take many years to rebuild the visitor facilities on the North Rim. But the old cabins and the lodge can't really be replaced.

Real sorry to hear that, luv visiting the American SW. Been to the Grand Canyon, but not
the North Rim. Rugged country, hope they can get that wildfire under control.

You forget to mention how this fire and what the hell, the fire in the 30's too, were lit by Trump.

Has the mainstream liberal vocabulary evolved to the point where Trumps evil nature is so well known that it not be explained explicitly. Just describe any problem or event that has had, or even might have, a bad outcome and it is presumed that it's Trumps fault.

You are the only one who has mentioned Trump in this thread.

Wild land fires are hard to manage.

Wild land fires have been mismanaged under both Republican and Democratic administrations.

This fire, the Dragon Bravo fire, appears to have started on July 4 with a lightning strike in the back country. The decision to classify it as a controlled burn needs to be investigated. Gov. Hobbs is calling for that. Why did the fire managers call this fire a controlled burn during a very hot and dry time of the year?

Umm, you do realize that Mad King Donald just blamed former president Obama, Hillary Clinton, James Comey, John Brennan and literally everyone in the Biden administration for creating and writing the Epstein List and files -- which, incidentally, he and AG Pam Bondi now claim never really existed despite his campaign promise to release them if re-elected.

Mad King Donald blamed the deaths from the Texas flood on former president Biden.

Mad King Donald blamed former president Biden for the airliner crash in the Potomac River near Washington, DC, in late January that killed 67 people.

Mad King Donald blamed an antisemitic firebomb attack in Boulder, Colorado on, you guessed it, former president Biden.

Mad King Donald: “I think the good parts are the Trump economy and the bad parts are the Biden economy because he’s done a terrible job.”

The list goes on and on.

During his first 100 days in office, NBC News tallied that Mad King Donald invoked former president Biden’s name an average of more than six times a day every single one of those days.

I'd say that the Trump Cult is being intentionally obtuse but let's be honest here: they're completely full of shit.

And we have receipts.

There is good reason to let some fires burn. But this was a bad decision. Whoever made the decision needs to be held accountable.

I've been to the North Rim twice. It's a surprisingly long drive from Phoenix because you have to go around (usually the east end) of the Canyon, almost to Page, then over to the west, and back down at Jacob Lake (almost an hour from Jacob Lake to the Rim).

Sounds like the main "village" at the North Rim was destroyed. There aren't that many constructions up there, unlike the South Rim. That one spot had the lodge, some cute cabins (tiny, but many were steps away from the view), and the visitor center. Didn't stay in the village (books out way in advance). I think the views from the North Rim are better, but it takes more driving between viewpoints because it's so spread out.

I was at the North Rim when I was younger, but the visit two years ago was to the South Rim. Wanted my wife to see it, and it was damn cold. I was dressed for it, but still... I'm getting old. I could hike around and I only fell once on snow during all the adventures, and luckily got back up.

The Canyon is most beautiful with snow. The contrast of the white caps with the reds and oranges of the rock are stunning. Pretty much only available at the South Rim, because they close the North Rim in the winter (too expensive to do all that plowing of the road).

Glad you got back up. Hope your wife enjoyed the view.

She did. She's big on taking lots of pictures and videos, posting them on FB, and all of her friends and relatives comment. We took a three week tour of the southwest, then hit the French Quarter in New Orleans and onto Florida. It was fun.

It is disheartening that a nonpolitical post was turned into a partisan anti/pro post.

I am ignoring this thread it is all heat and no light.
