I found this to be a stunning, and revealing, omission on his part after spending the previous part of the discussion discussing her ownership of the progressive wing among their list of candidates? Is she not Latina? Or did he just mean MALE Latinx candidates? Or is this just a sexist dismissal of women candidates in general?
Maybe it's just lamenting the "comparative" lack of Latino candidates? They were talking about 18 possible candidates:
(1) Newsom; (2) Ocasio-Cortez; (3) Buttigieg; (4) Gretchen Whitmer; (5) Ruben Gallego; (6) Josh Shapiro; (7) Wes Moore; (8) Harris; (9) Cory Booker; (10) Raphael Warnock; (11) Jon Ossoff; (12) Mark Kelly; (13) Jon Stewart; (14) J.B. Pritzker; (15) Andy Beshear; (16) Ro Khanna; (17) Amy Klobuchar; (18) Chris Murphy.
...of which only two are Latino - AOC and Ruben Gallego. That seems...low, relative to the demographic composition of the Democratic Party and the U.S. in general. You have four black candidates up there, but only two Latino choices.
So I think what he's talking about isn't a dismissal of AOC (who was picked number two, after all), but the fact that the Democratic party's "depth chart" for national leaders has so few Latinos. Surprising, given that some 20% of the country overall - and undoubtedly a higher percentage of the party - is Hispanic. Given the importance of Latinos to the Democratic coalition, that seems like an indicator that they're not advancing within the coalition commensurate with that importance.
