The mainstream media is failing us under Trump's fascist takeover.

What are the sources you are looking to for news.

I'll start with one of my favorites. I have been listening to The Daily Beans from the time it was 3 comedians sitting around a kitchen table taking about the fuckery of the first Trump admin. It was called Mueller She Wrote until the Mueller investigation ended; then it switched names. Allison Gill (AG) and Dana Goldberg host the show. The show begins with 10-15 min of news. Sometimes it is news that is being covered elsewhere. Other times it is news that is being ignored or covered with a fascist slant and they point out things the MSM is missing. Occasionally AG will break a story that is picked up by the MSM days later. There is often a section in the podcast interviewing someone engaged in resisting the Trump regime either by covering them at other news outlets, taking them to court, or running for office. The final section is the Good News section. It is where listener contribute things they have done to resist or simply stay sane. I highly recommend this podcast.

^^ So what are your alternatives to the complicit MSM? ^^

To really understand the world from a realistic political perspective, I suggest taking a break from news published in any English-speaking country for a few months.

If you limit yourself to non-English sources for a while, you'll be able to begin to untangle the enormous amount of indoctrination we've grown up with. While these new sources will still be biased, if you read them for a year or so and then return to our English-language media, you'll likely have a more realistic understanding of the world.

The truth is, media everywhere frames information to suit the local interest and their own standard public perspective. But that's what understanding the world means - really understanding what life is like outside of USA, how people think, and what they understand.

At first, you'll notice how completely different the stories and topics are from what we're used to. The initial impression might be that these foreign media outlets are all crazy and full of lies.

That's understandable. However, many of the stories you're unfamiliar with aren't lies. They're truths that contradict the lies we've come to accept. So, the narrative discrepancy can be on either side.

That's why I think it's a good idea to read international media. I don't mean channels funded by our NGOs that pop up in Google searches, but rather those developed outside of our power structure and translated into English as a final step.

This list isn't perfect, as it only includes sources that offer English translations. It is will useful to concentrate on one or two but read the stories thoroughly, linking them together.

You'l learn way more than reading anything published in the US - for the topic of understanding the world broadly.

I am not sure that reading other state controlled media outlets is an improvement over the MSM in this country. But I will be checking some of them out. Is there a reason you left Aljazeera off of your list?

^^I am not sure that reading other state controlled media outlets is an improvement over the MSM in this country^^

Totally get where you’re coming from! The advantage the sources I mentioned, and really diving into them to understand their perspectives, is that it can help balance out the narratives we hear all the time. Our media (both right and left and everywhere else) do amplify stories between each other more than we realize, until we read truly outside sources, and the we realize we're in a giant echo chamber and were just concentrating on various different minor echos.

^^ Is there a reason you left Aljazeera off of your list? ^^

Good question. Al Jazeera’s Arabic-language content does get significant funding from the Qatari government, so that sounds like a good sign as we'd get its perspective to align with Qatar’s goals, often pushing back against rivals like Saudi Arabia. But and this is a big bit, its English-language side, Al Jazeera English, launched in 2006, is almost like a separate outfit. Unlike the sources I listed, which have truly non-Western editors, AJE hires folks like former BBC journalists who bring a Western-style investigative vibe. It's designed to connect with global audiences, including in the West, and focuses on storytelling and covering regions that don’t always get the spotlight..

The mainstream media is failing us under Trump's fascist takeover...

I think there is much to be said for "mainstream" that is outside the US.
The Economist
BBC.com
Financial Times

There is something nice about those old-school places that have fact checkers, have their own staff reporters and writers, and have responsibility/liability for what they say. Every outlet will have some selectivity about which stories get more emphasis, but that's a lot better than simply making shit up or looking for a hook upon which to hang an agenda.

I have also heard very good things about DW.com from Germany (in English), though I haven't developed the habit of reading it myself.
