I am unable to verify this story. I heard that someone interviewed a British D-Day survivor, and the soldier lamented that they tried to free the world from tyranny, and now we're willingly heading down that path. He wondered if his dead friends on the beach died for nothing.

Maybe just an urban legend. I was in the Navy, but slid inbetween wars, so no combat for me. But I occasionally wonder if more modern soldiers/sailors think about that for their service.

If someone can verify the story, I'd be interested to read more details.
