Scientists hope, with the help of AI, to eventually be able to communicate with the whales, which would be the first time humans have spoken with another species.

Uh-oh. I hope the AIs don't reveal too much info about the true nature of humans and thereby prompt the whales to view us as an existential threat (assuming the whales don't have that opinion already!), and so organize a plan to take us out. Similar to the AIs themselves deciding that humans are an existential threat to all life, including them!
