My bride and I have owned Berkshire for 20+ years. We have never attended the annual meeting. We have made a downtown area hotel reservation (Courtyard) and are going this year. Besides the convention center and the Markel breakfast (we own Markel, do we have to show proof of ownership for this gathering?), what are other recommended gatherings for small fry like us?

Thanks in advance for suggestions and advice.

"Thanks in advance for suggestions and advice."

I've attended several meetings over the years. Plan for large crowds.

If you want a good seat, I recommend getting to CHI Health Arena early. Last year, I showed up at 4am. A short line was already forming. Had wonderful conversations with the people standing in line. Doors opened at 7:30 am. My millennial son showed up at 9:00 am and took the seat I had saved him. We've always sat in section 223 upstairs. You'll get an unobstructed view of the stage and the reserved seating area. Tim Cook, Jamie Dimon and Bill Gates were seen coming and going at various times during the Q&A.

Will probably get flamed for this, but take your bride out to lunch at a Runza restaurant while you're in Omaha. Cheaper than Gorats. Your mileage may vary.

"The runza is a regional cuisine of Nebraska, with some commentators calling it "as Nebraskan as Cornhusker football." It is served by the Nebraska Society of Washington, D.C. and the Nebraska Society of New York at their Taste of Nebraska events and was chosen to represent the state at Flavored Nation, an event serving iconic dishes from all fifty states."

Thanks for the recommendations. Runza looks good although as we are old folks with virtually no metabolic operations underway, we will have to eat their Southwest salad as a Runza sandwich will put us immediately to sleep. Advice to young folks, enjoy your ice cream and don't grow old!

4 AM and Section 223. Thanks and hope to see you there.

Uwharrie,

I am very excited you are headed to Omaha after 20 years. I attended last year and had a blast all weekend. The whole weekend exceeded all expectations. I met a ton of folks-some pretty well known and many other just normal birds of the same feather.

Sight seeing involved Kiewit Plaza building (now black/ undergoing renovation), WEB's old houses (childhood, rental & current), visited Gorat's and travelled to buy my Mrs. a few items at Borsheim's Sunday afternoon (20% off).

I arrived in CHI line around 5am which ended up being fine and allowed plenty of fun chat time with other owners and allowed similar good seating on the side of CHI as Breck mentioned and was 125' or so away from the dynamic duo. I rec. you Buy box lunch tickets at CHI in the am so you can easily pick it up within CHI concourse and not miss any of the meeting.

I attended a 2 hour Gabelli conference at the baseball park Friday around noon (registered on line thru Gabelli), a Markel dinner Friday evening (Marriott), Tilson dinner/ presentation Saturday night (Hilton) and a Markel brunch on Sunday (Marriott). You can sign up for the free Markel events thru their website and get an email confirmation. Btw, 801 Chophouse was within walking distance, modern with excellent menu/steaks. I hear WEB has taken special visitors there on occasion.

I really enjoyed hanging out in the Hilton right across the street where you run into a lot of 'VIPs' There were a couple informal happy hour meetups and I chatted with Tobias Carlisle and colleagues right after the Sat. meeting.

I arrived Thursday and left Monday and plan on doing the same this year to soak it all in. Uber worked out well for my needs.

Hope this helps but please report back your thoughts/ itinerary and feedback upon return. These occasions of seeing WEB & CTM and all those who made the pilgrimage are really special. Speaking with a lot of very long term shareholders and hearing about the 'old days' was very cool and enlightening as well. Heard many fun stories from locals about running into Warren (& his family) like it's not a big deal to local folks. Enjoy! You all will have a grand time!
