I'm with Arnold on this one. Newsome is wrong. Right now, CA is not gerrymandered. That's a good thing. Opening up even the possibility of gerrymandering is -to use the word from the link- evil.

Sorry, onepoorguy. The Republicans are not even trying to hide their rigging of the 2026 election. High principles are being bulldozed by them in their attempt.

Time to fight.

And yes, I know the counterargument.

But December 8, 1941 was not the time to lodge a formal complaint with the Japanese government for bombing Pearl Harbor.

I know. But that doesn't make a Dem trying to gerrymander "OK". If it's wrong for one, it's wrong for everyone. And it should be stopped wherever it is attempted.

We can go with your plan and after the election, we can complain that they're imposing their authoritarian project upon the rest of us... by cheating. And they will all smile and laugh and tell us to go to hell, get in line and bow to their God-King.

Nope.

Calling both of my Senate representatives today and will tell them that Chuck Schumer needs to be replaced, and they need to start fighting.

Republicans have abandoned the rules and guardrails.... and they are winning because we are letting them.

And now that they know that Trump's poll numbers are plunging to hell, they're making sure they can't lose in 26.

Which is what the Democrats in Texas are trying to do by leaving the state to prevent the legislature from having a quorum.

Exactly. And Pritzger, Newsom and Hochul are supporting them and telling Texas that they will do the same in their states to counterbalance any mischief they do by changing the congressional district boundaries to deliver Trump his extra House members.

Nationwide, Republicans have abandoned the rules and are attempting to ensure their authoritarian, anti-Democratic vision by force.

It's good to remember that John Adams, John Hancock and those other founders who lived in New England, along with their Committees of Correspondence..... realized that you can't play by Queensbury Rules when your opponent is a barbarian whose only interest is ensuring his own continuing dominance.

They dumped tea in Boston Harbor, and even as they petitioned the King of England for redress, they were busy stocking powder, shot and cannon in Concord MA.

It's like rabies, you want to get treatment when it's just a silly little dog bite. By the time you realize you should have done it, you're likely dead. It's time to fight fire with fire methinks. We're just frogs getting boiled. Perhaps when the ship of state is righted, we can try an amendment against gerrymandering, along with increased pay and a code of ethics that is prosecutable for the Supremes.

Amen to that, brother.

But first we have to stop these pirates from continuing to drill holes in the bottom of the ship.

I'm with you, but how can it be stopped?

Utahns passed a ballot initiative to stop the gerrymandering and the state legislature (totally controlled by the Republican Party) has tried to nullify the will of the people. The State Supreme Court has intervened. We'll see. But the GOP seems to be determined to institutionalize one party rule.

Then what??

Keep in mind that at least the CA proposal is being put before the citizens for a vote, and it only includes this one time redistricting. If enacted, the citizen's commission will still redraw districts after the 2030 census as before. And it won't be triggered unless TX is successful in its gerrymandering attempt. I hope the other states are the same, but I haven't looked into the details for those.

Going back to Pearl Harbor, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki would not have happened had Japan not attacked the US. Had Japan not attacked the US, there would have been no reason for the US to attack Japan.

Similarly, if TX does not attack their fellow 49 states by openly implementing a gerrymander, there would be no reason for CA to implement their own gerrymander. But when one state openly gerrymanders their districts to favor a political party, other states may feel they need to do the same to offset that unfair advantage and protect their own citizens' voice in the House.

To be clear, I agree that the TX attempt should be stopped. But if it is not stopped, you have to fight fire with fire. There needs to be an opposite and proportional response.

Sure, it's a black and white issue, right? Nope, I agree with Bill and AlphaW on this one. Fight fire with fire. It was the dems who've been trying since 2010 to enact an anti-gerrymandering bill, but no way do the pubs want to play. OK, then...

Also, as Matthew Dowd has pointed out how terrible the "enhanced" Texas gerrymandering is (since it is already gerrymandered in favor of the magats), it is extremely racist: "Texas population is more than 60% non-White, and less than 40% white. And the GOP wants to draw at least 2/3rds of the seats to hold white Republicans. Racist, undemocratic, wrong."
