BNSF Railway has hired Goldman Sachs (GS.N), and CSX Corp (CSX.O), is in talks to bring on financial advisers, as rival Union Pacific’s interest in acquiring Norfolk Southern sparked a wave of deal preparations that could reshape the U.S. freight rail industry, sources said.

The moves by BNSF, owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N), and Jacksonville-based CSX come after Union Pacific (UNP.N), began exploring a potential acquisition of Norfolk Southern (NSC.N), which could create a $200 billion coast-to-coast rail network and mark the most significant consolidation in the sector in decades.

Buffett/BRK & Goldman actually have had a fairly long relationship. He's no longer at the firm but WEB referred to Byron Trott as his favorite banker. Think that was after the Marmon acquisition was completed.

Buffett reached out to CNBC and said this in inaccurate.

This is unusual because Buffett's position historically is he neither confirms not denies rumors. Buit I suppose when a "reputable" firm like Reuters reports this --he felt the need to deny.

Further, the story is likely not even possible as Berkshire does not hire investment banks to evaluate potential acquisitions--per Buffett. Buffett added that part to his denial.
