And in Virginia: here's yours!
democrats are getting rid of mandatory sentences for all sorts of their core constituency:
https://x.com/ChristianHeiens/status/2013362092741...Democrats in Virginia have introduced a bill to eliminate mandatory minimum sentencing for rape, manslaughter, assaulting a law enforcement officer, possession and distribution of child pornography, and all repeat violent felonies.People note that democrats are soft on crime because...democrats are soft on crime.
But Spanberger's not done:
https://lis.virginia.gov/bill-details/20261/HB968/...In ascertaining the vote, the officers of election shall use ballot scanner machines to count machine-readable ballots and shall not count machine-readable ballots by hand for any reason or purpose not specifically authorized for by law.No more hand recounting of ballots!
Again, the left tells us how evil the right is. But each of those posts? They're just confessions.

There are a lot of arguments against minimum sentences. Primarily, they limit a judge's discretion in sentencing. Mandatory sentencing is worse, forcing prosecutors to convince a jury that someone needs to die.
It's not "soft on crime", though that is how the right will spin it. It's allowing a judge to judge how severe a crime is, rather than having to sentence a guy who beats his wife to death the same as a battered wife taking a cast iron skillet to the abuser's head.

Try to re-label it if you want, but section 18.2-53.1 gets rid of the y-year minimum sentence for brandishing or using a firearm to commit a felony and replaces it with...
First offense: 1 year minimum up to a maximum of 3 years -or- 1 year and a $2500 fine
Second offense: Used to be a felony and mandatory 5 years. They got rid of the 5 year mandatory part.
Soft on crime? Yep.

We could get onto a tangent about how effective prison is. But, instead, I'll just say I don't agree with maximum sentences, either. It should be up to the judge. You can't really legislate every contingency. That's why we have a judge to judge. I get that the intent is to reduce inconsistencies from one judge to another (e.g. a "hangin' judge" vs a "regular" judge). But I don't think those sorts of laws yield a greater benefit than just relying on the judges.

Dope1,
Judging by Spanberger's debate performance during her recent successful election campaign, she is brain dead and will not have a great 4 years.

Dope1,
Yup because their core constituencies are in fact criminals or their family members. Especially pedophiles.
