Bomb Kills General Who Led Russia’s Nuclear Defense Force

A Ukrainian official said Kyiv was responsible for the assassination of Gen. Igor Kirillov, the chief of Russia’s radioactive, chemical and biological defense forces.

A general in charge of the Russian military’s nuclear and chemical weapons protection forces was killed by a bomb on a Moscow street on Tuesday, the Russian authorities said, in one of the most brazen assassinations since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine nearly three years ago.

The general, Igor Kirillov, 54, died along with an aide after an explosive device planted in a scooter was detonated on Tuesday morning near the entryway to a residential building, Russia’s Investigative Committee, a law enforcement agency, said in a statement.

If only that Russian General had been able to make it to January 20, 2025.
Per Trump, the War ends on Day 1, so all of the combatants merely need to lay
low and keep their head down for a little over a month, and all their worries are over.
Seems really senseless to die with the end so close.

Peace On Earth coming soon.
Lower grocery prices coming soon.
Fantastic new National Healthcare coming soon.
Federal budget deficit, AND the national debt going to zero pretty soon ( I'll give
him till Jan 20, 2026 for that )
Many, Many more great things coming soon.

Between allowing American missiles to hit Russia, and now this - who knows, Club 401K might have truly sped up a nuclear confrontation.

And they don't care because "we dont like Putin!".

I hope hope hope one day France and Germany suffer literally in flames.

I wish I had the means and the heart.

"Lower grocery prices coming soon." -= Would be welcomed by many. But at least someone won smugly dismissing the problem - would be nice for starters

"Fantastic new National Healthcare coming soon."

No, it will be like the last 4 years -- why didn't you do better?

F"ederal budget deficit, AND the national debt going to zero pretty soon ( I'll give

NO WAY. Tribal people, bad culture. rampant family unit breakdown. NO way you'll get your fiscal house in order and I'm glad Trump won't do it. I want your Ass and Pee 500 and your credit rating to get planes flown into them.

"Many, Many more great things coming soon."

What? Great things have been happening! Fun things! But one of the best is - Climate Change won't be addressed.

How many Russian generals have been killed in this war? I’ve lost count.

Russian forces outnumber Ukrainian forces on the order of 3:1. Similar ratios hold for equipment and ammunition, yet for almost three years, Ukraine has held its own.

Russia’s command structure and decision making process is almost completely “top down”. Orders are issued from the Kremlin, and are executed in the field with minimal input allowed from those further down the chain of command. Local initiative is not encouraged.

This is the weakness of authoritarian governments. Local leadership is not trusted and is therefore held on a short leash.

This is the command structure that Tucker Carlson extolls every time he visits and broadcasts from Russia. He mistakes this authoritarianism for “strength”, and it is challenged every time another Russian general is killed, and every time another battalion of Russian troops is massacred after gathering yet again in an open field.

You’d think they’d learn.

But no…. Decisions are made at the top and Dear Leader is never wrong.

“Strength” is not what authoritarians say it is.

And Ukraine is proving that over and over again…… at the expense of the “invincible” Russian soldier.

Here's today's #s from the Kyiv Independent. Obviously not an unbiased source but more accurate than whatever Russian media would have.

I'd be interested to see the chart for Ukraine's losses so far. My googling has come up empty. Here's one from Oct, 2022 - https://www.graphicnews.com/en/pages/43383/ukraine...

I can't find an equivalent chart, but here's a NYT story without the paywall from a few days ago.

That's only the human losses. Still looking for the military equipment loss breakdown. Just curious, but I assume it's less than the Russian losses.

its hard to discern what would make putin capitulate after years of failure in ukraine, especially since it seems he feels he has nothing personally to lose. these are speculative views from various sources :

- ukraine needs to inflict ~10 to 1 casualty rate to stall\reverse russian forces.
this needs to be in strategic battles, and it seems ~4 to 1 has been more typical, but >100 to 1 has happened in smaller skirmishes.

- more importantly, ukraine needs to exceed hits on russia's strategic infrastructure targets by a decent rate.
genius putin & team has been spending a lot of resources on ukrainian civilian targets...burnishing his resume both as war criminal and NATO strategist!
given the performance, it seems there is no such thing as a russian general being a strategic target.

- russia is now on ~50% war economy and growing, but it seems the public is not that bothered yet, and the oligarchs are not getting less wealthy to notice.

Been wondering about the Jan 20th transition. It's assumed that Trump is going to end US military aid to Ukraine, and thus put Putin in a better position. But the rest of the NATO countries, sans USA, are still very willing to help Ukraine militarily. So why would Ukraine bow down to Trump/Putin and just give up and cede parts of Ukraine to Russia ? The neighboring countries
seem to have a very real fear of conceding anything to Putin, that fear being Putin ain't gonna stop if they roll over for him. And if Putin plays the Trump card and threatens those countries with war, does NATO back down out of fear Trump enters on Russian side ?

Gonna be some interesting times we all experience shortly.
