Dear Shrewd'mates,

I graduated from high school and college in S. Calif. Friends, relatives, colleagues, and former students of mine have been directly impacted by the LA-area wildfires, including at least two who have lost their homes and everything in them.

I need to do something in response, so I've decided to do a fundraiser to support World Central Kitchen's effort to provide immediate food assistance there. I ask that you kindly consider making a donation to the fundraiser using the gofundme link below. As you'll see when you click the link, all contributions go directly to WCK, not to me. You can contribute anonymously if you wish.

You may well have heard about WCK. Chef Jose' Andres established the organization in 2010 following the earthquake in Haiti. They expanded operations greatly following the hurricane that devastated Puerto Rico in 2017. (Trump tossed paper towels to desperate people there. WCK worked with local farmers, cooks, and volunteers to provide more than 2 million meals.) WCK is on the ground in Ukraine. They operated in Gaza until that became untenable. They hit the beach at Lahaina in 2023, and are working now in Fla, Ga, Tenn, and NC following the devastation there last fall. It is my honor to support them, and I hope you'll do so, too.

To encourage your support, in addition to donating directly myself I'm training now to complete a 75-mile quadrathlon (swim, paddle, bike, run) next month in Honolulu, where I am now. (I picked that distance because I'm 75 years old.) I've completed fundraisers like this before, but it will be a challenge. Your contribution, of whatever size, will encourage me greatly in this endeavor.

Thank you!

Aloha. Quick update on my fundraiser supporting World Central Kitchen’s meals program for S. Calif. wildfire victims.

So far, donations total $700, with much of it coming from folks here in Shrewd’m. Thank you!

As noted previously, to encourage donations I’ll be doing a 75-mile quadrathlon (of my own design) next month in Honolulu. I’m still tweaking the plan, but I expect it will be a 1.2-mile ocean swim followed by an 8.2-mile outrigger canoe paddle, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 9-mile run. I need to do it in Feb. for two reasons: 1. I need to train for it; 2. I turn 76 in March, and I don’t want to have to add another mile to it.

The training’s been going well, mostly running and paddling so far, but I did a 36-mile bike ride today, and it felt manageable.

I’d be greatly encouraged if we could get the donation total over the $1000 mark, though. Any amount you can chip in will be greatly appreciated. As you will see when you click the link, all funds go directly to WCK, not to me. And you can donate anonymously if you prefer. Mahalo!

To retain some semblance of positivity and solidarity amidst the current chaos and hate, I set out to complete a solo, self-supported 75-mile swim/paddle/bike/run fundraiser for World Central Kitchen. I’m deeply grateful to folks here in Shrewd’m who contributed, and I’m happy to report that we raised more than $1,280, which went directly to WCK.

I’m equally happy to report that I completed the “quadrathlon” on Feb. 18, in Honolulu. I swam 1.2 miles, paddled 8.8 miles, biked 56 miles, and ran (sort of) 9 miles. Ocean conditions for the swim and paddle were perfect. Steady tradewinds of 15 to 20 mph made for a challenging bike ride. Then, less than a mile into the run, I tripped on the sidewalk and fell on my hip, hard. I finished the 9 miles, nonetheless. A visit to ER the next morning found nothing broken, so it’s all good.

Some photos from the day are posted here: https://imgur.com/a/WAUEtd2

Cheers!

Well Done !

I still do xc ski races, and they take me very, very close to my physical limit,
so I know how to suffer. Buy ain't no way I'm doing a 1,2 mile open ocean swim, lol.

I luv paddling during the warm weather here, but getting that far offshore in
tiger-shark domain is more than I can handle, lol. Again, well done !

While the shark can undoubtedly swim faster than you, you should be able to outrun him... so it all comes down to who's the better bicyclist.

And at least with flying, you both have an even chance.
