The fact that Buffett bought a large (now around $8 billion) position in Chubb while selling Bank of America sends a strong message. Buffett prefers insurance companies over banks. He always has, at least since he grasped what could be done with insurance float. He ended up buying a large position in Bank of America almost by accident because a deal presented itself which was too hard to pass up. He loves - loves - insurance companies. He's modestly fond of BAC because it came from a well-structured deal that worked out nicely and will likely continue to increase its dividend modestly for many years.

Buffett has now sold 266 million shares of Bank of America and would have a bit over 30 million more to sell if selling only the expensive shares. If it works out that way we will know that he is not particularly enthusiastic about BAC but has a reasonably strong opinion that its future dividends will increase over the years and it's safe enough to hold on to the stock. The information on Buffett's 4Q 2024 portfolio changes will provide a strong hint as to what he is thinking. My own position in Bank of America - and probably most Bank of America holders - should be similar in cost to what Buffett paid for the more expensive 30%.
