JD Vance and Donnie are all upset about the squirrel that was euthanized by New York Dept. of Environmental Conservation Officers. It bit one of them and they needed to test it for rabies.

This is HUUUUGE.

“RIP Peanut,” read a post on a Trump campaign’s official TikTok account on Sunday. “Needlessly murdered by Democrat bureaucrats in New York.”

Now those damned Democrats won't let people have pets says Vance.

In the meantime...50,000 people can be killed by guns and that is just proof that the 2nd Amendment is functioning perfectly.

No worries, JD.

Just invite Haitians to move in and they’ll eat them.

I mean, you almost couldn't script this scene - Trump's campaign in the final days leading up to the election, getting distracted and shouting "SQUIRREL"!

Classic.

But I’ll bet Christie Noem hasn’t said a word about it.

“RIP Peanut,” read a post on a Trump campaign’s official TikTok account on Sunday. “Needlessly murdered by Democrat bureaucrats in New York.”

Other than the ludicrous labelling of this event as the work of an out of control Democratic bureaucracy, the event itself is a tragedy that should never have happened the way it did. The squirrel (and its raccoon friend) were both well-loved pets of a caring couple. Yes, they were both wild animals, but had been domesticated. Both animals were taken peremptorily after the couple was "ratted out" to the authorities. But it was done carelessly and with zero regard for the stress it put on the human couple. They apparently were not even cited for any health violation. And if the animals did in fact have rabies, then, yes, I suppose they would have to be euthanized, but the human owners should have been informed first. Both were apparently euthanized IN ORDER to test for rabies. Is there no way to test them BEFORE killing them?

No. There's no effective way to test for rabies on a live animal. Which is one reason why people generally aren't allowed to keep certain types of animals as pets, such as squirrels and raccoons. They're wild animals and undomesticated, and are susceptible to carrying rabies. It's cruel and inhumane generally to try to keep wild animals as pets, but for these types of animals specifically it's likely to end badly - because they can't be domesticated (ie. trained not to bite) and any bite is a death sentence for the animal.

Actually, they can test for rabies while the animal is alive. I had to look it up. It's a rabies titre test. Not a doctor, so don't know the details. It may also assume that the animal has a history of vaccination (e.g. pets), which a wild animal does not.

However, I suspect it is an antibodies test. If the animal was recently infected, it may not have the antibodies yet. If House MD is right, detecting illnesses residing in the brain is tricky, and rabies is primarily in the brain. So it's not 100%. Analyzing the brain is much more certain, which requires killing the animal.

I'm so-not-paying-attention to this election, that I didn't know about the squirrelicide.

In the Philippines you run into the problem that you've been bitten by an animal and it's gone, so you have to get treated, which is a series of shots. But you have a short period of time to get those shots - like 3-5 days per memory. Need to check again. :) If you get bitten during a typhoon it can be more than 5 days till you get near the shots, so, if prudent, you get two precursor shots that extend the period to 10-14 DAYS IIRC. So I got those because one of the problem is that by the time you show symptoms, you are dead, no cure - you have to be lucky.

In discussions everyone seemed to be aware of expats dying from rabies, and in one case a Swedish lady returned home and died. She wasn't aware and had played with a dog. About a third of the US cases are from people returning from overseas. We do now have a problem with raccoons in the North East. So that may have triggered it, who knows?

I got bit and went down. I had to buy three shots of something in the drug store across from the hospital, but I only needed one shot from the vial. By the time I got back, a skinny old man was there and got one of the shots for free. Someone else was on the way. :)

If that's the test I'm thinking of, that's a test for antibodies from the vaccine. If you're bringing a dog back from the Philippines, you have to get that test, and they have to send it to Japan, so it can take 3 months.

That might be it. Haven't owned a dog in a long time. I knew there was a test, but it wasn't as reliable as examination of the brain.
