I just learned about this site to get past paywalls:

https://www.removepaywall.com/

It worked for me when I entered a link to a NY Times article, though I had to select "option 2" since the default "option 1" was flagging me as a robot!

The site says it scans various archives - like archive.ph - for copies of the article.

Pretty convenient!

How is this different than, say, stealing?

How is this different than, say, stealing?

I'll leave that determination to the experts. It's certainly no worse than using https://archive.ph directly, but you could argue that that is also essentially stealing.

I do wonder why the NY Times, or some other site, hasn't sued the providers of archive.ph.

But they are only providing a facility for people with paid subscriptions to conveniently "archive" their paid-for articles "for personal use". They can't be held responsible for other people accessing that same content for free... is what I'm sure they would argue.

It is stealing when *YOU* do it, but not when the rest of us do it. ;P

Dunno, Lambo. I think it’s stealing when you do it also.

another gop finance dictionary request :

interweb stealing
= crime, worthy of fines\jail when political critics use content to self-inform.

= good biz, when AI\search\social media tech it to boost stock and\or make money.
in the latter, please use 'scrape' so as not to be litigated for slander.

Another take on paywalled content, from an AI. Gemini happily provided me a summary of a paywalled NY Times article, but pleaded that it couldn't provide the full content:

I do not have access to the full, word-for-word text of the New York Times article. As an AI, I am unable to bypass paywalls, log into external accounts, or reproduce entire copyrighted articles from subscription-based news websites.

To read the interactive graphics, explore the full blueprint breakdowns, and read the complete reporting, you can access the article directly on The New York Times website using an active subscription or a digital pass.

Very interesting... But I have to wonder if Gemini actually does have a paid subscription which it is using to provide the summary, despite it claiming otherwise. How else could it provide an accurate summary? Then again, if I merely switch to "reader view" in my browser, I seem to have access to the complete text of the article, sans images, and with no apparent paywall. Am I still stealing?

This was the article in question:
