Weird. I clicked through to the article, and it doesn't make any mention of even a single protest "erupting" in a blue city

No, perhaps you misunderstood.... people were not in the streets erupting in protest but protests were 'verbal eruptions' from the local politicians at their meetings, 'Los Angeles City council meeting' and mentioned were verbal protests in Chicago and NYC.

Citizens and politicians alike are erupting in verbal protest over the illegal aliens.
I wonder how long angry verbal protests will last and erupt into angry free for all.

I mentions a clash between illegals and police in chicago in another thread. Police were
able to bring it under control.
