Mad King Donald said he will declare a national emergency and "add an additional 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA," effective tomorrow.
Mad King Donald insists that Canada must "drop their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various dairy products," the same tariffs that Mad King Donald negotiated himself in the USMCA during his first term in office.
He went on to threaten new crippling tariffs that will destroy automobile manufacturing.
The stock market took an immediate nosedive.
What a freakin' doofus. It's easier now to understand how he bankrupted casinos.

If nothing else, Trump is certainly a Drama Queen.
Unfortunately, he is many other things as well--none of them good.

The sinister national emergency will be a poorly or completely unsupported declaration about immigration something something. That will be used as a pretext for troops potentially being called on to do things none of them ever signed up to do. In a couple years, there could be a declaration of martial law - again about as bogus as a football bat with a $3 bill taped to it - and that in turn be used as the pretext to stay in power.
The difference between Zelenskyy declaring martial law (and his approval rating is very, very high - no viable potential opposition candidate in Ukraine is even close to being competitive) and the Cheeto doing so is that there's a war in Ukraine, but there's no war between Oceania and Eastasia.

That could be the explanation. Another possibility is that he and/or his family are making money by trading the pre-planned whipsaws. Of course, we’ll probably never know, since he’s fired everyone who might have independent oversight authority.
I think the general answer to the question, “Why is Trump doing this?” is either “Because he thinks it can make him money” or “Because it makes him feel powerful.”
