Unanimous choice from the GOP caucus, so he got 220 votes.

Seems like he was a sane dude until he fell under the spell of Trump. We will see how legislation proceeds now.

And who is Mike Johnson?

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/mike-joh...

The little-known congressman was first elected in 2016, representing a solidly Republican part of north and western Louisiana. He has since ascended through the ranks, chairing the conservative Republican Study Committee and holding the position of House Republican conference vice chair. He sits on the Judiciary Committee (and chairs a subcommittee on the Constitution), the Armed Services Committee and the newly created select committee on "Weaponization of the Federal Government."

The NPC network chooses to focus on "election denial" because of course they do. What's more interesting about him is this:

Johnson's voting record has earned him a lifetime rating of 92% from the American Conservative Union and 90% from Heritage Action.

Kevin McCarthy, on the other hand, is only a 53% lifetime from Heritage Action.
What will be overlooked here is the role that Hakeem Jeffries played in all this. Without the votes of the democrats McCarthy is still Speaker. Now, the democrats get a very much more conservative Speaker in Johnson who is the past chair of the GOP Study Committee.

They could have made deals with McCarthy that they won't get from Johnson. They may have played a role in finally uniting the GOP caucus...and come to regret it.

You still have all those moderate republicans that voted for Johnson "for the good of the party". It is unlikely they will support extreme legislation if that is all he brings to the floor. McCarthy had shown you can not trust what he says, so perhaps it is good he is gone. Making deals and not following through is straight from the Trump playbook; hopefully Johnson doesn't fall into that trap.

They wouldn't have voted for him if they didn't think they could work with him. The GOP Rules Committee is one of the most respected functions there is inside the GOP caucus and Johnson used to chair it. That means he has street cred amongst most if not all of the factions in the GOP side of the House.

He's also not a member of the Freedom Caucus, so he doesn't have that getting in the way of working with the moderates.

My question is: Why didn't we hear about this guy before?

<Seems like he was a sane dude until he fell under the spell of Trump.>

Yeah, If by a "sane dude" you mean a guy who believes that an invisible man with magical powers lives in the sky,
an idiot of a man who doesn't understand the world he lives in. A guy who scoffs at the separation of church and state.

"Religion is a main source of hatred in the world, its adherents are violent, irrational, intolerant, allied to racism, tribalism, and bigotry,
invested in ignorance and hostile to free inquiry, contemptuous of women and coercive toward children: religion ought to have a great deal on its conscience." ~Christopher Hitchens

Dope1: Why didn't we hear about this guy before?

You just weren't listening.

He's the guy who said that if all those women had been forced to have babies and not been given choice after Roe, we'd have a lot more "able-bodied workers" and Social Security and Medicare wouldn't be in jeopardy of cuts today. Damn women.

Johnson advocates prison for women who have abortions (so a misogynist) and for doctors who perform abortions.

Johnson supports a national abortion ban beginning at fertilization.

In the Louisiana legislature, he proposed the Marriage and Conscience Act to protect people who discriminate against same-sex married couples. So a strong opponent of LGBT rights.

Johnson is a young earth creationist and believes that the Earth was created approximately 6,000 years ago. <---- on topic!

Johnson voted against a $40 billion aid package for Ukraine and voted against additional allocations to Ukraine for 2022 and aid in 2023. He has said sending aid to Ukraine is a "terrible mistake."

In short, just the kind of guy to invigorate democrats to get out and vote to take back the House in 2024.

Umm. Exactly which one on the list of Mike Johnson Crazy was untrue or a smear, please?

Other than none of them.

Clearly, Johnson is proud of those positions.

Probably all of them, given your track record of deliberately misquoting or otherwise just blowing stuff out of proportion.

Meanwhile, it's on to governing for the GOP and on to complaints from the likes of you. Onward!

By the way, here's what democrat mouth organ CNN has to say about the guy:

"You know, I think he is a person who's hard to demonize. You know, it's very easy to demonize somebody like a Jim Jordan, who's a firebrand. He's out there, he's fighting. And then Donald Trump can demonize an Emmer because he didn't believe the election was rigged.

But you had this kind of, I don't use the word 'milquetoast,' that's not quite the right word, he's a serious person, who is not prone to getting in big, huge fights with people. He is known as a listener, I was told. He is hugely conservative, but he doesn't wear it on his sleeve all the time. So he can get along with moderates and listen to them. And it will be interesting to see what happens with Ukraine aid, for example. But, you know, he's not the devil incarnate."

LOL. So your tame media recognizes that the usual smear tactics (that were downloaded into your programming) aren't going to fly.

Never heard of the guy before. But apparently he's already providing Dems ammunition for their campaigns. In addition to the other things already mentioned, his first press conference was a disaster (i.e. a bonanza for Dem campaign people).

As a side note, a YEC shouldn't be eligible for public office. They are certifiable. Just my opinion. I can deal with differences of opinion, but a "young Earth" is simply false. We can prove it. Full stop.

I am not as concerned as many here for a few reasons.

My experience has been that those with radical religious views ingrained in them from childhood are often very rational in other areas of their life. Mitt Romney is an example of this.

While Johnson was a trump acolyte he has little legislative history; we don't really know what he will do. He has completely backtracked on his "election denialism", so there is hope there. Biden has said he is not concerned about what will happen when Trump loses. We do know Johnson would want a nationwide 15 week abortion ban. He will push for a more fiscally conservative federal budget. However, he also appears to be a "get along" kind of guy so perhaps he has a chance of developing some bipartisan legislation that can get through the senate. Jim Jordan was clearly a hardliner unwilling to compromise; we do not know yet what Johnson will do, but he has said he plans to delegate more than previous speakers.

I am taking a wait and see attitude right now. Johnson may not let his personal hard right beliefs get in the way of good governance.

---------------------

Driving back from Costco today I heard a speech by Johnson thanking his colleagues for the honor, then he launched into a pseudo sermon. Something from the scripture to the effect that God's plan brings the best people together to govern in these trying times and with his guidance, yada, yada, yada...

I am not doing a good job of remembering all of his religious references, but needles to say, I found it off putting. That said, he is light years better than Pelosi or Hakeem Jeffries, so I can put up with a little religious talk, actually a lot of religious talk, when Jeffries is the alternative.

Maybe, but this does not point towards rational thinking ability:

Of course he got tacit support from the Democrats. The whack right-wingers smugly think they finally got control of the Party. Instead, they got played as if by Rachmaninoff. The Democrats can walk into the '24 election season while the 'Pubs continue with the next circular shootout. Unreal.
