Big news for Alibaba today. With founder and largest shareholder Jack Ma returning to mainland China for the first time in a year, Alibaba released a reorg plan to split itself into 6 separate business units which will be managed independently and 5/6 of which may be seek IPOs.

The market likes the news, up ~12% at the moment. Perhaps it will 'unlock value' as they say.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/1-alibaba-splits-si...

"
The Chinese e-commerce conglomerate said that the biggest restructuring in its 24 year history would see it split into six units -- Cloud Intelligence Group, Taobao Tmall Commerce Group, Local Services Group, Cainiao Smart Logistics Group, Global Digital Commerce Group and Digital Media and Entertainment Group

The revamp of the conglomerate comes ... as Beijing looks to spur private sector growth after a two-year-long regulatory crackdown on its showpiece private enterprises.

"The original intention and fundamental purpose of this reform is to make our organisation more agile, shorten decision making links and respond faster," Zhang said in a letter to staff seen by Reuters.

...

Daniel Zhang will continue to serve as chairman and CEO of Alibaba Group, which will follow a holding company management model, and concurrently serve as CEO of Cloud Intelligence Group.

Each of the six business groups will be managed by its own CEO and board of directors and will retain the flexibility to raise outside capital and seek an initial public offering, it said.

The exception would be Taobao Tmall Commerce Group that handles its China commerce businesses and will remain an Alibaba Group wholly owned unit.

Here's hoping. 140 is breakeven for me on all the various buys. I expect it may take a year or two to get there though.

The joke of course is being one of the "BABA bag holders"

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/b/bag-holder.as...

I've sold a tranche or two acquired at c$80 which rallied above $110. I'm not convinced it's a 10 year LTBH any more and may consider cutting my losses on the company at some point.

The split up of the units adds more uncertainty IMO. One of the attractions for me was an Amazon style approach to growth, cross pollination of innovation and the ecosystem across the group, economies of scale and network effects etc etc.

I'll never get attached to a company and will review realistically. It's a tough call.

Thoughts welcome.

The core commerce division is the only one profitable among the six, which alone would report higher earning and cash flow and would be worth about 50% more than the current market cap. The valuation of the other five and 33% ownership of Ant group would probably add $100-200 billions, plus $60 billions in cash and equity investments in other other companies. I would value BABA at about $200/share, and that's the point I would consider lighten up depending on economic and geopolitical situations in China.

-Thoughts on valuation multiple post spin off for ecommerce? (Ebay low PE?)
-How about the loss making divisions?
-When they were all together there was certainly more hope and growth potential factored in,
-Cloud has been disappointing and was identified as the main future growth engine.
-Then there's also the CCP discount.
-Interesting video released recently by Pabrai where he's second guessing his Prosus investment on the back of Gov actions.
