The total return of Berkshire's equity portfolio in 2025 was 15.8%, including estimated dividends of 1.1%. The total return of the S&P 500 was 17.9%. Berkshire's return was estimated as follows:

return = (ending value - starting value)/starting value, plus dividend yield

return = (ending value - starting value)/starting value, plus dividend yield

That's good as a starting point, but you'd probably want to work in the net equity sales (sales and purchases) and their timing during 2025. After that, Berkshire’s equity portfolio return would likely look a bit better, I'd suspect.

Yikes! Thanks. I knew that I mis-typed the equation. Thankfully in the calculation I did include purchases of equity securities and sales of equity securities. However I did not put in the timing of the purchases or sales, which would have improved the calculation. Fortunately when the purchases and sales are small in comparison to the total portfolio value, the timing is not critical.
