He published a mass market book based on backtesting but was not the first to use measurable criteria on a repeated basis to invest, which goes back at least to Benjamin Graham. The S&P itself uses hard criteria to create indices and "quants" existed before Jim's book. The "Dogs of the Dow" is such a method. https://institutional.bmogam.com/ca-en/insights/in...
