President Donald Trump said Monday that he wants to suspend the federal gas tax, in an effort to bring down gas prices that would require action from Congress. This is to try to address the negative political aspects of, pretty-much single handedly creating a situation causing gas prices to rise. (Well, actually, while he claims he can ace a mental acuity test, he allowed himself to be cajoled by Netanyahu, the Saudi crown prince and the pair's assorted US boosters who contributed heavily to Trump's political campaign, to attack Iran - not once, but twice over the past few months).

That would immediately increase the national deficit. Add that to the recent income tax rates coupled with the apparent Supreme Court declaring the recently leveed VAT tax (assorted tariffs imposed by the Trump administration) illegal - with a potential of having to return the collected funds as well as the recent - and continuing - expenditure of the self-inflicted wound of our adventure in the Persian Gulf area, and you have a fiscal nightmare growing (for some ever-closer future generation to deal with).

suspend the federal gas tax

In 2008, there was a lot of chatter about suspending the fuel tax. The Congressman I had at that time, actually did reach out to Proles for input. I received a robocall from him, inviting me to call his office in Livonia to provide input. I called the office, and told the staffer how wrongheaded that is. Fuel taxes pay for road maintenance. Suspending the tax will not make the potholes go away on their own. Roads will only become more dilapidated. Anyone living in Michigan, can see the effect of decades of underfunding road maintenance, to provide one group or another with another tax cut.

and you have a fiscal nightmare growing (for some ever-closer future generation to deal with).

[censored} said it out loud, several weeks ago: words to the effect "cancel child care, Medicare, and Medicaid, to pay for the war". This is, of course, what the "starve the beast" crowd has wanted to do for years. Not surprisingly, my reply is [censored]

That would immediately increase the national deficit.

And apparently not even do that much for the consumer since it looks like it might be about 18 cents/gallon. When prices have gone up that much in not more than a week and are continuing to climb, and have gone up an average of at least a dollar and half, it won't help a whole lot.

...but it's the thought that counts.

Yes, the continued thought that a failed President can buy votes to offset his unsuccessful actions - tariffs & wars - and cover up his relations and actions with Epstein.

As the old saying goes, you can fool some of the people all the time (MAGA), you can fool all of the people some time (the last election promises) but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. Note the polls.

But he tries - and refuses to face reality.

It's the spin that counts. Talking points will include a "savings" number from the "tax relief" based on a person driving an F-150, in heavy city traffic, for 200 miles per week.

I suppose I needed a ;) emoji to the sentence. Yes, buying votes is all this is about - pander to those susceptible to the bribe, but it really only works among those who are already in the cult since the cut to the price of gas will be so minimal.
