The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

How is AI ANY different than access to a super smart human? Why do we hold AI to a higher standard than the smartest humans in the world?

For one, smart people generally are conscious of the limits of their information and training.

There are those who aren't, or don't care. At Caltech we called such Nobel Prize winners, 21-year old Ph.D.s(*), and such amongst us "assholes". In my standards group, we eventually removed one of them from interacting directly with the group since his reaction to disagreement or pushback was to directly and literally accuse those people of being "idiots". Very smart in limited domains, yes. Recognized no limits, yes. Uninterested in how to interact with other people, yes.

(*) Stephen Wolfram. I was personally witness to a conversation he had with other grad students in which he called all Caltech undergraduate students "idiots". AFAICT the extreme arrogance did not appear to improve with age.

(apparently "idiot" is a go-to label amongst very smart, very arrogant people judging by my small sample size.)
