Ha! I had something similar. I have an always-on raspberrypi that pings my main desktop computer to send out an alarm if the desktop hasn't been on for an entire day. Been working fine forever. A couple of months ago I ditched the third-party firewall on the desktop and replaced it with the Windows Firewall Control. Seems the default is to block all incoming pings, even from the home network.
Oops!

The monitoring program then ran around with its hair on fire, sending out alerts & alarms.
