Kroger's top pricing executive testified during a court hearing on the US government’s bid to block the grocery chain’s purchase of rival Albertsons Cos that Kroger had, indeed, raised its prices more than required to adjust for higher costs.

The company’s goal is to “pass through our inflation to consumers,” Groff said in response to questions about his email. But Kroger decided to raise the prices in excess of inflation.

Huh. I was told vice president Harris was out of her mind for suggesting such price manipulation and that greedflation was a myth.

Though, as long as they weren't colluding with other grocers, I don't think this is illegal. Collusion would trigger RICO, I believe. Though they did get that insulin douchebag several years ago, and I don't think he colluded. So maybe there's some law somewhere.

This is common, really. Especially in medicine. There isn't usually a price list until you see a bill. They charge whatever they want, there is very little competition (do you price-shop a hospital?), and almost no transparency. And when you need it, you need it. Usually urgently (so no time to price-shop, even if you wanted to).

Why do Putin's agents want to go after private businesses?

Why can't consumersjust say 'screw you Kroger ' and go elsewhere?

Putin's agents: Get out. Go back to KGB HQ

Sigh. The ignorance here.

https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/KR/financials/
[$billions]
Year Rev N/I GM% Net margin %
2023 150.1 2.1 22.2% 1.4%
2022 148.3 2.2 21.4% 1.5%
2021 137.9 1.6 22.0% 1.2%

Fine job of price gouging.

How profitable is the grocery business?
