yes, i know its a drop in the bucket, but it is still $70m of shareholder capital.
which probably exceeds the individual stake of any millions of retail investors.
i wonder what berkshire retail holders would think had any subsidiary done this.

It was a bribe. Undoubtedly unethical, but it may in fact have been good ROI.

Berkshire had a bit of an ethics/judgement lapse they had to deal with about 15 years ago. David Sokol didn't disclose that he had a ~$10m stake in Lubrizol which Berkshire bought and ended up netting him about ~$3m.

That's pretty much throw 'em in jail, by my reckoning, but that didn't happen. Now, did Buffett really come down on him mercilessly (as he has promised, should any of his leaders lose a shred of reputation)? No, as he's very conflict avoidant.
