Not quite an investing topic but would people here recommend delaying non-critical surgeries until medicare has started? Or is it better to get it done before medicare starts?

I'm fortunate enough where I have federal health insurance that I will keep after medicare starts so that should cover most expenses.

What I don't know or understand is whether having both federal health insurance and medicare would limit choices of surgeons as opposed to not having medicare (i.e., does medicare limit my doctor choices)?

Thanks
Rich

I waited about a year until Medicare started for me to get a couple of skin cancer lesions removed. It would have cost about $1,500 out-of-pocket under my Obamacare Plan where I had a $5,000 annual deductible. It was about $200 out-of-pocket under Medicare. I was certain that the lesions were basal or squamous cell cancer rather than a melanoma.

It also interesting to note that cancer diagnoses spike at age 65 because people are reluctant to see a doctor due to unlimited price gouging pre-age-65.

From reading on TMF, a lot of intercst's posts and on his site, as well as older family members, I knew that Medicare did not cover dental. So I got my limit of dental work done for probably 4 years, with minimal out of pocket costs, via my employee healthcare from work, before retirement happened.

All dental work is out of pocket now, but the routine bi annual visits are costing about the same as the annual premiums paid for dental coverage via employer plan. Costs will go up when anything
other than routine maintenance is needed, of course.

Have no idea on other medical care, been lucky and haven't needed any
(yet, lol,it'll happen), so no experience with that yet.
