But it also means that some one retiring in their 30's or 40's is also very likely to be wealthy by the time they qualify for Social Security (with 77% of the maximum monthly check, while paying about half the FICA taxes.) And you're getting all that while relieving yourself of the inconvenience of submitting to the supervision of an employer.
