I heard that small caps are the cheapest they have been in 25 years. When that happened, small caps tripled in value, while the s and p stayed flat for the next 7 years. Their p/e is about 10, while the markets p/e is about 23. AVUV is a good small cap value fund.

Mark19, why do you think AVUV is a good fund? I looked at 10 Mid- and Small-Cap funds at 63D, 200D, and 504D (2 years), and AVUV was in the bottom quartile for each timeframe. 10th of 10 at 63D, 8th of 10 at 200D, and 8th of 10 at 504D.

I have no opinion on SC stocks as a current investment, but AVUV has outperformed IRJ (SC600) and IJH (MC400) since the bottom in 2020:

https://stockcharts.com/freecharts/perf.php?AVUV,I...

I would be interested to know what funds you used in your comparison. If I were going to add a SC fund to the LTBH portion of my portfolio, AVUV is one I would consider. But I could be missing better choices.

I haven't done any in-depth research into this one, but it has done well lately. SMIG. It is a small value ETF. It has a higher expense ratio at 0.6% and a similar dividend yield. AVUV has a longer history.

Bahl & Gaynor Small/Mid Cap Income Growth. Inception Date 2021-08-25

On my list, it would have placed ahead of all the other ETFs listed at each of the three time periods. (It only trailed SPY)

As a matter of interest, another small value fund that may be worth considering is the Dimensional ETF DFSV. Its characteristics are likely to be similar to those of AVUV, a fund created by former Dimensional managers, and operated along similar lines.

DFSV is an ETF implementation of an established mutual fund, DFSVX, which has existed since 2000.

I have read that active management is more likely to pay off in the small cap space. Not sure about that. Here is DFSVX (an active SC value fund) compared to IJR (SC blend):

The problem with most of the places that do charts is they are price only and don't include reinvested dividends. That can make a HUGE difference.

This one does that, and shows that DFSVX is quite better than IJR

FYI, stockcharts.com is one site that by default includes reinvested dividends.
You can also see the price-only returns of something by putting "_" before the ticker.

Since you can also graph the ratio of two tickers, you can see the change due to dividends by doing a chart of XYZ:_XYZ
For example, this is a graph of the difference that dividends have made to the returns of Ford in the last 5 years.
