American soldiers fought the Taliban in Afghanistan for 20 years. Hundreds of thousands of locals risked their lives to help the American war effort.

Many of those people evacuated to the U.S. for their own safety once the Americans left in 2021. But the U.S. government sent a group of 1,100 to a military base in Qatar, promising them a path to U.S. settlement if they passed further checks.

That’s not what happened. The U.S. is working on a plan that would force Afghans to choose between returning to their country under Taliban rule and being sent to Congo, an African nation suffering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. “Now we are stuck between bad and worse options,” one of the refugees told The Times.

U.S. lawmakers in both parties are unhappy with the plan. “We made promises to those fighting by our side to bring them to the U.S.,” Representative Don Bacon, Republican of Nebraska, said. “We should keep our promises.” —NYT

Well, Mr. Bacon. You’re a member of Congress. Write a bill instructing the President to make those folks legal residents of the US and immediately bring them here.

You could go a step further and provide a clear path to citizenship as well. That’s where background checks might be useful.

Do you have the courage to give the current President that kind of instruction? Or are you just another in a long line of Chicken Republicans who are all talk and no action?

Key Cases and Incidents

ISIS-Inspired Plot (2024): Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi and Abdullah Haji Zada, Afghan citizens and U.S. permanent residents, were arrested and charged with plotting a terrorist attack on Election Day 2024 for ISIS.

National Guard Shooting (2025): Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national granted asylum after entering in 2021, was identified as the suspect in a shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C..

Terror Watchlist Entries: Incidents have occurred where Afghan nationals on the FBI’s terror watchlist were apprehended by ICE after initially being released into the U.S., such as a man arrested in Texas in early 2024.

Past Cases: John Walker Lindh, an American citizen, was famously captured fighting for the Taliban in 2001.

Straight, white, Christian people, who do the same ting, and there are plenty of them, are dismissed as "disturbed individuals". But any Muslim to the same thing, and the media goes into full "Islamic boogyman" hysteria mode.
