Gen X and President Biden: Reality bites
https://www.npr.org/2023/12/27/1217878506/gen-x-co...

"Gen X is the most Republican of the generations," said Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University and author of the book Generations, which examines what drives generational differences.

Twenge says that political leanings of generations can be influenced by the popularity of the president when that generation is in adolescence or young adulthood. For Gen X, that is largely defined by an unpopular Carter and a popular Republican president, Ronald Reagan.

Gen X here. All I remember about Reagan is his Spitting Image puppet. Funny.
I grew up with Thatcher. Didn’t make me a conservative.

In 2020 my brother said “Are those two old farts the best you can come up with?”
I agreed, but Biden got my vote, obviously, and he will do again. But, damn, he is TOO OLD. I was under the impression that he was going to save us from Trump, then step aside for the younger generation. But no, he got power and can’t give it up. He’s a decent guy. Sad.

I’m mentally preparing for another 4 years of Trump. Oh well. I’ll probably get another tax cut. We’re doing well. If the rubes want another 4 years of being taken advantage of, let them have it.

Me, too. And I'm retired now, paid off the house, so unless he fiddles with investment taxes, it won't affect me one way or the other. Heck, I'm having to worry about IRMAA because 1poormom's death left me with an IRA I have to distribute. Need to deal with that before IRMAA gets calculated in 2026 (or, rather, based on the 2026 tax year). Yes, it is a good problem to have, and definitely a first-world problem.

My concern is really two-fold:
1) he is deliberately divisive, which is making calm discussion of issues almost impossible
2) he is almost an isolationist, which allows players like China and Russia to run rampant; he even made noises about pulling out of NATO.

The second one could affect you or me. Wars are messy, and seldom good for economies. The economy affects even us retired people. And if the right is worried about asylum-seekers...??!! There are already a bunch from Ukraine. And wars are a good reason for asylum.

As we learned in WWII, the oceans may insulate us from global strife, but only to a point. We're still affected, and in this modern world a LOT more than we were in the 1940s.

I'm not so sure that's the case.

I think Biden would much rather retire, but the political calculus at this point suggests he's the best chance for preventing a christian nationalist takeover ... with an autocratic fraud at the helm.

Ask you friend who he would field against Trump when it is imperative we win. The best bet is Newsome and my bet is he cannot win against Trump. Like Sano I think Biden wouldn't run if we had someone who had a good chance against Trump. Biden is too old? I think your friend is too young to realize he's got a shotgun pointed at his head.

It's not about "too old" in 2024. IMO, it's about incumbency. When you have an incumbent, it is very difficult to "primary" them. You'll get almost zero support from your party. If Biden was going to do one term, he should have said so at least a year ago so the Party could have planned accordingly. Who is the next "rising star"? Dunno, because we have an incumbent who will be running for a second term.

Also...Trump is only three years younger. At that age, that's a negligible difference. If Biden is too old, so is Trump. At least Biden knows how politics work, and is relatively competent.

The first sentence is too depressing to spend much time contemplating. The last few sentences are too cynical for my tastes.

Biden is much more than 'relatively competent'. He's got a lifetime of experience in public service; he knows how to get things done. He knows how to put together a great cabinet, etc.

Trump has none of the abilities and is just lazy, incompetent and corrupt. And he would bring with him a whole bunch of sycophantic power hungry losers. Even worse than his first administration.

The choice is CLEAR.

LOL ges, thanks for your comedy show and laughs tonight. No need to go out to celebrate tonight. I can Kamala crackling laugh from here. Yep, Kamala was a great cabinet choice.
Happy New Year ges, send my HNY wishes to Slow Joe.

We can hope Trump is convicted of one or more of his crimes, before the election. That *might* help.

I thought the docs case was a slam dunk, apparently not?

The SCOTUS is corrupt. The law is not working. It's hard not to be cynical.

Be nice to GEN X.....we're not as cool as Boomers, and we'll NEVER be qualified to hold the Greatest Generation's suit jacket.....

But cmon.

We were 30 years old....when we were 10.

And now we're 50......and we are still really 30.

There's something to be proud of :)
