Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House; John Thune, Senate Majority Leader——I assume you know that Congress controls tarrifs, yes?

Same question, boys. What in God's holy name is wrong with you?

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE — President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he plans to hike tariffs on imports of Canadian goods by an extra 10% because of an anti-tariff television ad aired by the province of Ontario.

The ad used the words of former President Ronald Reagan to criticize U.S. tariffs, angering Trump, who said he would end trade talks with Canada. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would pull the ad after the weekend, and it ran Friday night during the first game of the World Series.

“Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform as he flew aboard Air Force One to Malaysia.

“Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now.”

It was unclear what legal authority Trump would use to impose the additional import taxes. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on when the 10% hike would come into effect, and whether it would apply to all Canadian goods.

I watched the entire speech. It was maybe 10% justifying a tariff on Japanese semiconductors, and 90% anti-tariff, so the content of the ad is consistent with the bulk of the speech. Yes, it could have been typical Reagan, talking big, but bowing to his paymasters' cries for protection, just like the big three and Harley Davidson. Reagan was, recall, a master propagandist. Learned his trade making films for the government during the war.

From the viewpoint of today’s America, a candidate winning 49 out of 50 states is just astonishing. What can we attribute the change to… The bifurcated media environment? The ‘Big Sort’? Other factors?

Reagan received the most electoral votes (525 in 1984), and many previous Presidents also got about 60% of the popular vote. (Hoover, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan from 1928 to 1984 average popular vote was 59%. The lower vote getters Truman, Kennedy, Carter got about 50% of the popular vote.)

The average winner from 1988 to 2024 only got 50% of the popular vote.

1928 to 1984 big wins: winner got about 59% of the popular vote.
1928 to 1984 competitive: winner got about 50% of the popular vote.
1988 to 2024: winner got about 50% of the popular vote.

Something seems to have changed after 1988. There are no more consensus candidates or landslide victories. Fox News started in 1996. The internet has fractured news sources. Maybe computer technology made it easier to create a competitive race. It seems common nowadays that many people don't like any of the candidates. Negative campaigning can now be hidden in PACs, and campaign finance laws are ineffective at limiting spending. More mud slinging leads to more people just tossing a coin to decide. Gerrymandering has also led to more extreme party positions, and contributes to the Big Sort (why stay in an area where your political views are vilified, and your vote is ignored).

Wow, John Quincy Adams only got 30.9% of the popular vote? Yikes.

The electoral system CLEARLY sucks to high heaven, no matter how good intentioned it may have started out to be.
