Trump criticizes NATO over Iran in meeting with alliance's boss

"He is clearly disappointed with many NATO allies, and I ‌can see his point," Rutte said on CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper," after spending more than two hours at the White House. "This was a very frank, very open ‌discussion, but also a discussion between two good friends."

Rutte has had a reputation as something of a "Trump whisperer", for his ability to have a civil conversation with Trump the Conqueror. "Very frank", is diplomaticeese for a pretty contentious meeting. The only level worse than "very frank" would be "direct", meaning someone says "you are scum!", followed by walking out of the meeting.

Rutte has had a reputation as something of a "Trump whisperer",

That‘s a rather generous term for someone who continuously praises and appeases (Trump being the ‚Daddy of NATO‘ etc.).

Difficult to keep the alliance alive if Trump wants to see it as his private strike force to support his ill-advised military adventures though.

I know from personal experience, that the price of appeasing people like Trump gets higher, on each cycle. Maybe the price demanded by God and Savior Trump got too high, for even Rutte to flatter his way out of it.
